[08:32]<2jgd>i tried to restart apt-proxy but no use
[08:32]<zzggdzf_lzydg>im lost..this seems overly complicated..or something. there is no man file flr nxclient wich is sort of dissenchanting?
[08:32]<slzzz>bony: is your proxy working?
[08:32]<2jgd>sparr: it used to work perfectly before i upgrade the server were apt-proxy is installed
[08:33]<2jgd>sparr: when i restart apt-prxy before upgrading it used to take 2 to 3 min for restarting but now it hardly takes 1 sec
[08:34]<2jgd>there is nothing wrong in conf file of apt-proxy.
[08:40]<2jgd>quit
[08:46]<zzggdzf_lzydg>this is just nuts, anyone every use freenx?
[08:47]<zzggdzf_lzydg>aparently the server is up, and working ive added the user, i just dont know how to work the client
[08:58]<szczzz>hey all
[08:58]<szczzz>anyone here had any experience with xebian?
[08:59]<rdlxy>never 'eard of it
[08:59]<szczzz>debian for the xbox console
[08:59]<rdlxy>ah
[08:59]<svjgnm>xbox-linux something org com
[08:59]<svjgnm>!xebian
[08:59]<mlcr>http://www.xbox-linux.org/Xebian - ML http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Mailing_Lists
[08:59]<szczzz>I have looked at the site has anyone used it?
[09:01]<szczzz>lol
[09:01]<szczzz>yer I aint used one much until I saw one for $40 and was like hmm got to try get lniux onto it
[09:02]<szczzz>I am tossing up whether to attempt to use xebian or gentoox
[09:02]<szczzz>well first question Debian vs Gentoo
[09:02]<szczzz>anyone ever looked at gentoo?
[09:02]<rdlxy>that's not a question ;)
[09:03]<fyvrrn>why is it not possible/advisable/easy to downgrade your libc6 package?
[09:03]<szczzz>how does it fair against debian? why choose debian for your system
[09:03]<lnvnzs>sakara: the question is too vague, please ask what you really want to know, if it's about debian
[09:03]<rdlxy>!tell sakara about greenhouse
[09:03]<svjgnm>a greenhouse of pot!
[09:04]<svjgnm>muuahaha
[09:04]<lnvnzs>sakara: as for why choose debian, because it takes no time to install, and takes no time to maintain, and no time to configure, and no time to maintain. gentoo is great if you have lots of time on your hands and want to use that time to maintain your systems, rather than to get work done
[09:04]<svjgnm>!why debian
[09:04]<mlcr>http://www.debian.org/intro/why_debian or at http://snowcrash.tdyc.com/articles/imoore2.html or at http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/reviews/2204/1/ or http://people.debian.org/~srivasta/talks/why_debian/
[09:05]<mjgmnfnfzzzj>We'd argue that if you have that time, you're better off spending it helping Debian than wasting it on your own box.
[09:05]<lnvnzs>sakara: if you want any more detail about gentoo, you'll have to ask on some channel where people use it
[09:05]<szczzz>yes of course
[09:05]<lnvnzs>anyway, that's sort of the short version for why we think debian is better
[09:05]<szczzz>I ask there for a comparison and they will say go ask the debian people lol
[09:05]<lnvnzs>plus, we think debian has better quality control
[09:06]<mjgmnfnfzzzj>sakara: well, that's pretty much because no one has bothered to compare them; most people who really understand Debian run Debian and haven't ever bothered to run Gentoo.
[09:06]<lnvnzs>from what I've heard, in gentoo's unstable branch, if you can call it that, things are horribly broken all the time. in debian's unstable, things are horribly broken only on occasion
[09:06]<szczzz>ic
[09:06]<ugsvr2fn>Not to mention; there are numerous benchmarks out there. And gentoo just isn't faster.
[09:07]<dgn>I have problems using libcdk5-dev: all cdk headerfiles are in /usr/include/cdk, unfortunately all header files include other cdk like "#include <cdk.h>" instead of "#include <cdk/cdk.h>". Is there a workaround, should I post a bug report. any solutions ?
[09:07]<szczzz>can debian have a gui put onto it?
[09:07]<szczzz>does it come shiped with one
[09:07]<szczzz>pkged with one
[09:07]<ugsvr2fn>yes
[09:07]<zsxrcyg>yes it can have any gui you want
[09:07]<lnvnzs>sakara: more than one. debian has a wider selection of free software shipped than just about anyone else. all major free software GUI components are included.
[09:07]<szczzz>nice
[09:08]<szczzz>so I install it
[09:08]<szczzz>and apt-get gnome-desktop ?
[09:08]<wjfs>peterS: s/just about//
[09:08]<szczzz>and boom I have a gui?
[09:08]<zsxrcyg>ok... looking for sparc ppl that run sparc port of debian
[09:08]<ugsvr2fn>sakara: apt-get install xorg x-window-system-core gnome
[09:08]<lnvnzs>rshakin: there exists #debian-sparc, but I think #sparc is more active
[09:08]<ugsvr2fn>sakara: apt-get install xorg x-window-system-core gnome gdm firefox
[09:08]<szczzz>awesome sounds brilliant
[09:08]<wjfs>sakara: no. then you just have gnome. you can run your X-server from somewhere else you know
[09:09]<szczzz>what kernel is the latest stable release running
[09:09]<lnvnzs>wols: x-window-system-core doesn't include an X server? it used to
[09:09]<zsxrcyg>yeah... i am already in #debian-sparc logging in the sparc channel now.
[09:09]<ugsvr2fn>sakara: 2.6.8
[09:09]<ugsvr2fn>er; wait no
[09:09]<wjfs>peterS: it does. but he only menitioned gnome in his apt line
[09:09]<ugsvr2fn>I don't know.
[09:09]<lnvnzs>wols: oh right. but someone else answered his question already, mentioning those other packages
[09:09]<wjfs>2.6.8 is right
[09:09]<szczzz>current is 2.6.15-25 yer?
[09:10]<wjfs>no
[09:10]<wjfs>current is 2.6.17-4
[09:10]<szczzz>ahh
[09:10]<szczzz>why have such an old kernel?
[09:11]<zsxrcyg>hehe ehh it's debian we are little behind... but on the safe side
[09:11]<ugsvr2fn>sakara: Because it's stable.
[09:11]<lnvnzs>sakara: because at the beginning of the freeze before release last year, that was current
[09:11]<wjfs>cause it's debian stable which came out 1 year ago
[09:11]<svzguggz_>you can use whatever you want, sakara.
[09:11]<lnvnzs>sakara: it takes a long time to make sure a kernel works really well on all 12 supported Debian architectures
[09:11]<szczzz>fair enough
[09:12]<szczzz>that makes sence?
[09:12]<szczzz>I have never understood the whole kernel development
[09:12]<lnvnzs>sakara: you can't just swap in a new kernel and ship a stable release, not on Debian. next release, scheduled for December, will probably have some flavor of 2.6.17.
[09:12]<wjfs>if you run a desktop system, you might want to look at debian testing aka etch. There are some caveats (certainly no more than othre "stable" distros) but you can have a very recent kernel or other software
[09:12]<szczzz>properly anyway
[09:13]<szczzz>wols I want a gui because I wont have a keyboard for my system..
[09:13]<trffu>I dont have a keyboard nor a monitor for my system :P
[09:13]<zsxrcyg>is there a way to use a new kernel package with the stable branch
[09:14]<szczzz>well not once its running
[09:14]<lnvnzs>rshakin: you can get newer kernel packages intended for use on stable, at http://backports.org/
