[21:04]<svnw>thefish: knoppix == offtopic
[21:05]<znffyd>thefish: knoppix kinda let me down when they released dvd images ... i don't think a live cd should ever be that large in size
[21:05]<svnw>rellim: stop
[21:05]<znffyd>stew: what is on topic? nobody is talking
[21:05]<vxnpysx>lol
[21:05]<svnw>rellim: debian is on-topic
[21:05]<z2zjvdzg>rellim: knoppix can be discussed in #knoppix
[21:05]<svnw>rellim: if you want to talk about various distros go to ##linux
[21:05]<znffyd>but NOBODY IS TALKING, what is wrong with friendly conversation?
[21:06]<z2zjvdzg>stew: can you help me install debian?
[21:06]<znffyd>i have only ever and only speak of debian or its children ... why not talk about then here?
[21:06]<gve>abrotman: heh
[21:06]<z2zjvdzg>the children are offtopic
[21:06]<svnw>abrotman: ask #elive-unstable
[21:06]<znffyd>omfg
[21:06]<z2zjvdzg>stew: someone joined the other day with the username of elive-uns or something like that
[21:07]<z2zjvdzg>i was waiting for them to ask you stuff
[21:07]<znffyd>ok, i will just sit here in silence until someone comes in and gets "on topic" and then i will join the conversation .... while i sit here in silence, could you get rid of the skirt and put some pants on?
[21:08]<svnw>rellim: if you are trying to now belittle us by suggesting we are wearing skirts, just keep it to yourself, if you don't like the policies of this channel, find another
[21:08]<z2zjvdzg>rellim: of course .. if you're bored .. go fix RC bugs
[21:09]<gve>yeah if you have aterm and etch you can confirm a bug for me :P
[21:09]<znffyd>stew: i was trying to joke around and make light of a moment, i am sorry if i was out of line ... calm down
[21:10]<z2zjvdzg>kick him in the head!
[21:10]<znffyd>abrotman: i'm in class .... i might go work on packages later, but atm i am just being bored to death by my prof
[21:10]<z2zjvdzg>rellim: you should really pay attention
[21:10]<gve>yeah, seriously
[21:10]<znffyd>abrotman: he's teaching me ada95, when will i ever use this programming language?
[21:10]<gve>if you're not gonna pay attention then just leave
[21:10]<z2zjvdzg>working for the gov't
[21:11]<znffyd>no comment
[21:11]<z2zjvdzg>rellim: if you feel your coursework is irrelevant .. ask the dean to change the course structure
[21:11]<gve>I never even heard of that language /me looks it up
[21:11]<znffyd>nvz: exactly
[21:11]<z2zjvdzg>nvz: it was at one time a well-thought-of language
[21:12]<z2zjvdzg>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ada_programming_language
[21:12]<znffyd>nvz: it is old and pointless, only used by the gov't for weapons and navigation stuffs
[21:12]<z2zjvdzg>it's not old or pointless
[21:12]<znffyd>WAIT WAIT ... we are not on topic, this conversation either needs to move or stop
[21:13]<z2zjvdzg>let's go to #ada
[21:13]<znffyd>k
[21:14]<fglvjg>good riddance
[21:14]<z2zjvdzg>at least there's an Ada compiler in debian :)
[21:15]<z2zjvdzg>i even have an Ada book at home
[21:15]<acl>anyone know how to get nxclient / nxserver to work without gnome / KDE ?
[21:15]<z2zjvdzg>!nx
[21:15]<mlcr>somebody said nx was http://www.nomachine.com/ NX terminal server client/server. Like VNC but faster, with security, multi-client. Partially non-free. #nx
[21:16]<gve>rellim: don't be a troll now.. either they dont like you or they dont like knoppix.. either way take a hint :P
[21:17]<z2zjvdzg>nvz: he's gone
[21:17]<z2zjvdzg>nvz: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ada_programming_language
[21:18]<rdlxy>nvz: http://home.pipeline.com/~hbaker1/sigplannotices/gigo-1997-04.html
[21:22]<gve>damn lag..I switched to calvino, cause nevin must not likeme
[21:24]<gve>I am not sure how server selection goes but 9 out of 10 times I end up on calvino if I use irc.freenode.net
[21:24]<gve>er on nevin I mean
[21:25]<mzzajwwwot>what's a good console font?
[21:26]<gve>whatever works
[21:26]<gve>I.e. one thats already installed and you are looking at
[21:27]<gve>don't ask stupid questions like what's "good"
[21:31]<svzguggz>Marco13185: take a look at this http://linuxgazette.net/issue91/loozzr.html
[21:31]<svzguggz>Marco13185: maybe its useful for you
[21:34]<gve>I've never read the linux gazette, I must be missing out
[21:34]<z2zjvdzg>eh .. no
[21:35]<zrppwozk>ok I'm seeing the Debian Binary Package howto
[21:35]<mnzyrm>hey
[21:35]<mnzyrm>when running tcpdump
[21:35]<mnzyrm>what kinda things do you wanna look for
[21:35]<mnzyrm>in terms of anomolies
[21:35]<mnzyrm>or things that could cause network performance issues
[21:35]<gve>I've been reading a lot of the documentation that debian has in the sarge repo since I dont have internet at home.. I just havent bothered with LG yet
[21:35]<zrppwozk>but I don't see how to make this work for your general './configure && make && make install' kind of packages
[21:35]<zrppwozk>can anyone point me where I need to go for this?
[21:36]<mmuljgv>\q
[21:41]<cygmjz>helo
[21:42]<z2zjvdzg>ralfWORK: what do you want to do?
[21:43]<gve>ahhh!! damn people turning the tv on and leaving!!
[21:43]<gve>kindor: hello
[21:43]<zrppwozk>abrotman: specifically? I have VWmare tools and I want to build a .deb of it
[21:43]<z2zjvdzg>!mg
[21:43]<mlcr>A simple packaging walkthrough can be found by (as root) "apt-get install maint-guide" and then (as user) lynx /usr/share/doc/maint-guide/maint-guide.en.html/index.html" (or maint-guide.en.html in sarge/sid). 'Mg' is also the chemical symbol for magnesium, or the shorthand for Madagascar, or the maintainers guide can be found at http://www.debian.org/doc/maint-guide/
[21:43]<z2zjvdzg>!mentors
[21:43]<mlcr>hmm... mentors is Please /msg dpkg mg and/or try http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors/ and/or try #debian-mentors, or http://mentors.debian.net/
[21:44]<gve>ralfWORK: there is no need to make a deb of VMware tools you unzip it and run ./vmware-installer.pl or whatever its called
[21:44]<svnw>!mentors =~ s,#debian-mentors,#debian-mentors on irc.debian.org,
[21:44]<mlcr>OK, stew
[21:44]<gve>ralfWORK: as I found out last night you would probably be better off not using it
[21:45]<zrppwozk>nvz: I have a need to have them installed
[21:45]<zrppwozk>and I have plenty of machines that need this
[21:45]<zrppwozk>so I really do need a .deb
[21:45]<gve>ralfWORK: well regaurdless its a binary installer package making a deb would be the same as just unzipping it and running the isntaller, because you would still have to install it just the same if it were a deb
[21:46]<gve>ralfWORK: you can remove the vmware-tools-dist and tar.gz when you are done
[21:46]<z2zjvdzg>stew: does aptitude just sync to dpkg nightly ?
[21:46]<svnw>abrotman: not yet
[21:46]<svnw>soon
[21:47]<svnw>abrotman: i'll probably soon move dpkg.vireo.org and aptitude to run off the main server so they both get updated nightly
[21:47]<vjfve>hey all, so, when I install a package via apt and it gives me the "recommended" and "suggested" packages to use, can I view that list again even after I've installed a certain package?
[21:47]<svnw>abrotman: i've just been lazy about it
[21:47]<gve>ralfWORK: you will likely need the kernel-headers for your running kernel and a sane build environment.
[21:47]<svnw>VolVE: apt-cache show packagename
[21:47]<z2zjvdzg>stew: the main server?
[21:48]<zrppwozk>nvz: I have a patched kernel package I've created
[21:48]<svnw>uhh s,main,same,
