[02:24]<rsr>sgeigerbot: let me know how it turns out
[02:25]<svwgfyg>Vasistha: i just get 'cannot find /dev/.../camera in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab' returned when i try 'mount /dav/sda1/mnt/camera'
[02:25]<vrsysvxr>stwelin: uhm, you need a space there between sda1 and /mnt
[02:26]<svwgfyg>special device /dev/sda1 does not exist.
[02:26]<svwgfyg>hmm
[02:26]<vrsysvxr>stwelin: alright, so we have the "not trivially easy" case
[02:26]<snzranwnfks>man
[02:26]<snzranwnfks>this isn't easy
[02:27]<vrsysvxr>stwelin: perhaps you should pastebin lsusb
[02:27]<svwgfyg>Vasistha: these sort of issues seem to have an attraction to me.
[02:27]<svwgfyg>haha.
[02:27]<rjdrgjqk>hi everyone! i've edited /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh so that EDITMOTD=NO, and my motd is still updated with uname when booting
[02:27]<vrsysvxr>stwelin: oh, not to worry... you're on a learning curve, here... it took me a long, long time to get comfortable in debian
[02:27]<rjdrgjqk>where should i solve the problem?
[02:28]<svwgfyg>Vasistha: hopefully i will get used to it, i still have to get a lot of things working
[02:28]<vrsysvxr>stwelin: and, honestly, I'm still in no position to really be helping you... I'm just following the steps here, and hopefully someone with some real knowledge will jump in
[02:28]<rsr>Romano2K: try /etc/default/rcS
[02:28]<vrsysvxr>stwelin: but try lsusb and see what it gives you
[02:28]<rjdrgjqk>asg: oh you're look right! thank you
[02:29]<rsr>Romano2K: you're welcome
[02:29]<svwgfyg>Vasistha: I just recently started working on debian too, i had trouble getting my devices working in a few other distros, i'm trying them each one by one. i have a lot of weird devices that are not very linux-friendly, apparently
[02:29]<svwgfyg>Vasistha: it's been hell trying to get my Wacom tablet to work.
[02:29]<nylljj>http://www.bash.org/?36167
[02:29]<nylljj>;)
[02:30]<vrsysvxr>stwelin: yow, that's not going to make it easy to switch to linux. Device drivers are probably the single most difficult hurdle to linux comfort
[02:30]<vrsysvxr>stwelin: but let's see what we can do!!
[02:30]<rsr>Nippoo: gtk or kde?
[02:31]<rjdrgjqk>asg: i don't understand the aim of bootmisc.sh but...
[02:31]<svwgfyg>Vasistha: Yeah, i've come to realize that too. I still need to get my Radeon configured, i have a bunch of overhead from my window manager not being handled correctly
[02:31]<-- pzjsv2uzg xzs puy>net irc")
[02:31]<azjrunt>anyone else using a HP Deskjet 3740 ?
[02:31]<nylljj>asg: kde. a *lot* more attractive.
[02:31]<vrsysvxr>stwelin: anyway, one thing at a time :P what does lsusb say?
[02:31]<vrsysvxr>!ask
[02:31]<mlcr>If you have a question, just ask! For Example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. when I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, or if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask (ask the whole channel!). We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer, ask later or ask debian-user@lists.debian.org
[02:31]<syg>what package is 'dig' in?
[02:32]<rsr>Romano2K: it's a generic file that's changed over time
[02:32]<cnyvxo0901>crogue5, No, but I'm trying to get an OfficeJet 6110xi working with Sarge.
[02:32]<rsr>Nippoo: I prefer brunettes myself
[02:32]<rjdrgjqk>asg: u mean i can remove bootmisc.sh ?
[02:32]<snzranwnfks>!u
[02:32]<mlcr>Damnit Jim! It's YOU. Y-O-U. Not *U*. U is a letter. YOU is a word. See ne1, or wud. Dutch for 'you' (formal singular). See http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/?id=20041201
[02:32]<rsr>Romano2K: no, don't remove it
[02:32]<zfzzyssz>hmm kaffeine couldn't find dvb-t hardware i think its the bt878 chip for tv card :) how to fix that? ^^
[02:33]<rjdrgjqk>asg: maybe i could "update-rc -f bootmisc.sh remove" ?
[02:33]<rsr>Romano2K: just leave it, it won't hurt anything
[02:33]<azjrunt>keith80403, ya i am having no luck with mine
[02:33]<rjdrgjqk>okay
[02:33]<rjdrgjqk>thank you :)
[02:33]<vrsysvxr>sin: /msg dpkg search
[02:34]<azjrunt>keith80403, tells me the ppd is installed, but the name isn't on the list, and any i do try never send a test page
[02:34]<svwgfyg>Honestly, this is going to make me sound really idiotic, but i have no real experience with lsusb.
[02:34]<svwgfyg>Vasistha, oops, read above. ^
[02:35]<vrsysvxr>stwelin: just type it in the terminal
[02:35]<svwgfyg>Vasistha: all it sees is my wacom tablet and something by Jing-Mold Enterprises
[02:36]<svwgfyg>Vasistha: maybe my keyboard.
[02:36]<sznyznz2jv>asg: you rock. Thanks again.
[02:36]<rsr>sgeigerbot: no worries. have fun.
[02:36]<sznyznz2jv>asg: that was the first thing I forgot this month.
[02:36]<rsr>sgeigerbot: :)
[02:36]<cnyvxo0901>crogue5, I show two documents in the queue, they pause and stay there. I'm going to try an updated driver from the HP site, and uninstall the packages from the Sarge CD's and see if that helps.
[02:37]<rsr>sgeigerbot: http://gimp.shacknet.nu/computers/datacenter/e6800-disgraced.jpg
[02:37]<vrsysvxr>stwelin: hrm. well, is the camera connected and turned on and in the right mode and everything? Is there any chance the jing-mold thing could be the camera?
[02:38]<azjrunt>tried that for me, i am going to re-install the packages later, the HP site doens't have linux drivers or a PPD download, only Mac and windows
[02:38]<svwgfyg>vasistha: possibly? i will google jing mold and see if it has any connections to one of my USB devices, as for the camera, it's in the same mode that it's set to when i transfer pictures off of it using a Windows OS.
[02:39]<vrsysvxr>stwelin: better to just unplug the camera, give it 10 seconds, hit lsusb, plug in the camera again, wait 10 secs, hit lsusb again, see if there are changes
[02:39]<svwgfyg>Vasistha, [which would be turned on, and in pic viewer mode.]
[02:39]<vrsysvxr>stwelin: also, type 'dmesg' after plugging it in to see what the kernel is seeing
[02:41]<svwgfyg>Vasistha: no differences in lsusb
[02:41]<anffd-xjdn>asg: why?? (Re that picture)
[02:41]<svwgfyg>Vasistha: the kernel ouput is too huge for my term to hold anyway, i'm not sure how much help it will be.
[02:42]<vrsysvxr>stwelin: pipe it through tail ... dmesg | tail -n 30
[02:42]<sufgzfyguw>uptime
[02:42]<sufgzfyguw> 02:38:43 up 12 days, 13:30, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
[02:42]<sufgzfyguw>great!
[02:42]<vrsysvxr>stwelin: the main thing we're trying to do is to find out whether the kernel sees the camera. It's not appearing in lsusb, which is too bad ... it is more likely to appear in dmesg, though
[02:43]<svwgfyg>Vasistha: yeah, i understand
[02:43]<svwgfyg>Vasistha: kernel is only seeing 2 devices as well
[02:43]<vrsysvxr>stwelin: btw, I hope you're using a 2.6 kernel? With all these new devices, you should definitely be on 2.6
[02:44]<svwgfyg>Vasistha: of course.
[02:44]<vrsysvxr>stwelin: we're reaching the limits of my troubleshooting skills :P
[02:44]<vrsysvxr>let's see, I know there's another place to look...
[02:44]<svwgfyg>Vasistha: heh, no worries, i can relate, i only go so far as well
[02:45]<svwgfyg>Vasistha: you've given me some useful tips though, i have more USB devices to troubleshoot, too. :P
[02:46]<svwgfyg>Vasistha: My brother should be able to help me try to mount the camera as a drive, though, i think i'll give that a shot.
[02:47]<svwgfyg>Vasistha: he has more experience with debian than i do.
[02:47]<svwgfyg>er, well, linux.
[02:47]<vrsysvxr>stwelin: yeah ... if the kernel can't see it, then chances are digikam won't either :-) But I'm by no means an authority on whether we've covered all the bases on detection
[02:49]<svwgfyg>Vasistha: thanks for the help anyway, at least when i discuss it with my brother i can cross out some options, should help narrow it down.
[02:50]<vrsysvxr>stwelin: you're welcome, and good luck with it
[02:57]<ams>How do I use apt behind a proxy?
[02:58]<vd2>is there a way to install microsoft's true type fonts in sarge?
[02:59]<vrsysvxr>tmb: check out defoma
[03:00]<vrsysvxr>tmb: if you want microsoft's "core fonts" there's a package msttcorefonts that will automatically install them
[03:00]<z2zjvdzg>msttcorefonts
[03:00]<z2zjvdzg>!msttcorefonts
[03:00]<mlcr>from memory, msttcorefonts is package to install MSFT core TrueType fonts. http://corefonts.sourceforge.net/ for font *.EXEs, unpack with cabextract. Install the 'x-ttcidfont-conf' package, and add this FontPath line to your XF86Config-4 file in the "Files" section: 'FontPath "/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType"'. then 'xset fp rehash'
[03:00]<z2zjvdzg>i bet that's out of date
[03:00]<vrsysvxr>tmb: I actually grabbed a couple fonts from my windows partition :-)
[03:01]<vrsysvxr>abrotman: yeah, the script that apt installs seems to do everything pretty intelligently and automatically
