[09:42]<snl>Azar, even floppy based linux systems on 1.4 MB usualy contain a MTA or a script that does that job in some way
[09:43]<vnfvzzyzv>I think the most they should use is syslog, personally. :-/
[09:43]<zezz>sep, I guess you are right
[09:43]<vnfvzzyzv>But thats just me.
[09:43]<wjfs>You don't need an MTA. you do need an MDA tho
[09:44]<snl>Teltariat, well you are free to write a mta-> syslog proxy :)
[09:44]<vnfvzzyzv>uh
[09:44]<vnfvzzyzv>lol.
[09:44]<snl>Teltariat, no use whining about it. scratch your own itch :)
[09:45]<nnvnaxj>ok I need some help getting alsa set up
[09:45]<snl>!alsa one-liner
[09:45]<mlcr>hmm... alsa one-liner is apt-get install alsa-base alsa-utils && alsaconf, or if you are running a 2.4 kernel ask me about <2.4 alsa one-liner>, or after its installed, run alsamixer and unmute the volume levels, or some applications don't know how to talk directly to alsa, so "modprobe snd-pcm-oss" and "echo snd-pcm-oss >> /etc/modules" to provide the oss compatibility layer
[09:46]<nnvnaxj>alsamixer won't run
[09:46]<zezz>sep, interesting those using etch are urged to upgrade exim3 to exim4
[09:47]<zezz>NetEcho: maybe you need to install it
[09:47]<nnvnaxj>snd_ctl_open failed for default
[09:47]<snl>Azar, naturally. it will be the default in etch
[09:47]<snl>probably..
[09:47]<nnvnaxj>its installed I ran alsaconf already\
[09:47]<zezz>great, maybe we won't have to manually do it
[09:48]<zezz>NetEcho: maybe you need to remove the oss modules first in order to let snd_ modules work
[09:48]<nnvnaxj>and how do you do that?
[09:48]<zezz>uh that's hard, have to identify them, and remove them from the module list
[09:48]<nnvnaxj>you mean the snd_*_oss mods?
[09:48]<zezz>nooooooo
[09:48]<fyr2fn>heh, i never noticed how shiny the keyboard on my old laptop had gotten.. dunno if its from use, or greasy pizza fingers :)
[09:49]<nnvnaxj>those are the only oss modules loaded
[09:49]<snl>NetEcho, lsmod ; check if oss modules are loaded. if they are, find out where they are loaded from and comment out those. /etc/modules is a likely candidate
[09:49]<zezz>anything starting snd_ is good, the oss module will be listed as your audio module name
[09:49]<fyr2fn>Azar: alsaconf does that for you
[09:49]<nnvnaxj>yea I ran alsaconf
[09:49]<zezz>liable, nice to hear this news... got tired to do it manually
[09:49]<fyr2fn>NetEcho: and it found a card and configured it?
[09:50]<nnvnaxj>I don't know if it found a card
[09:50]<fyr2fn>NetEcho: run it again and pay attention :P
[09:50]<nnvnaxj>it just gave me a message that was empty
[09:50]<nnvnaxj>no text to say if it found one
[09:51]<fyr2fn>NetEcho: what kernel are you running?
[09:51]<nnvnaxj>default 2.6
[09:51]<znvszznzdnz>why no xorgconfig in the xorg packages
[09:52]<fyr2fn>NetEcho: lsmod shows snd_ modules loaded?
[09:53]<snl>jetscreamer, dont know. perhaps to force people into useing drxx :)
[09:53]<nnvnaxj>yea
[09:54]<nnvnaxj>these are the sound drivers I find from dell
[09:54]<nnvnaxj>for my service tag
[09:54]<nnvnaxj>
[09:54]<nnvnaxj> Creative Labs Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED HD Audio
[09:54]<nnvnaxj> SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio
[09:54]<nnvnaxj>sorry
[09:54]<nnvnaxj>didn't think that'd go as flood
[09:54]<znvszznzdnz>pastebot
[09:55]<nnvnaxj>but yea it shows a Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy Advanced HD and a Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major
[09:56]<nnvnaxj>could pcspkr be needed since my internal speaker is also my laptop speakers?
[09:56]<znvszznzdnz>no
[09:57]<znvszznzdnz>did you paste your lsmod output anywhere?
[09:57]<nnvnaxj>I can
[09:57]<nnvnaxj>1 sec
[09:57]<znvszznzdnz>not here eh... :)
[09:59]<nnvnaxj>:o
[09:59]<nnvnaxj>apt-get install irssi can't find a package
[09:59]<znvszznzdnz>irssi-text
[09:59]<nnvnaxj>gonna have to use ssh
[09:59]<znvszznzdnz>apt-cache search <searchterm> is your friend
[10:00]<nnvnaxj>http://channels.debian.net/paste/3379
[10:01]<znvszznzdnz>no snd_emu10k1
[10:01]<nnvnaxj>whats that?
[10:01]<znvszznzdnz>isn't that the alsa audigy as well as the live?
[10:01]<znvszznzdnz>the driver for the actual sound card
[10:01]<nnvnaxj>guess alsaconf didn't find it
[10:01]<nnvnaxj>I can get a rpm for redhat from dell
[10:01]<nnvnaxj>or suse
[10:02]<znvszznzdnz>no
[10:02]<nnvnaxj>but no source package
[10:02]<znvszznzdnz>what kernel, uname -r
[10:02]<nnvnaxj>2.6.8 I believe
[10:02]<nnvnaxj>2.6.8-2
[10:03]<znvszznzdnz>i'm trying to check if that is the correct one, but you can try modprobe snd_emu10k1 .. iirc it's for both
[10:03]<znvszznzdnz>but there are different audigy versions
[10:03]<znvszznzdnz>iirc
[10:04]<nnvnaxj> (snd-hda-intel)
[10:04]<nnvnaxj>is what someone's site says for this laptop model
[10:04]<wjfs>that's your onboard sound
[10:04]<nnvnaxj>yea
[10:04]<nnvnaxj>but alsaconf didn't load it
[10:05]<wjfs>cause 2.6.8 probably doesn't have that driver (yet)
[10:05]<wjfs>so you might need a newer kernel
[10:05]<nnvnaxj>oh wait they don't have sound working yet
[10:05]<nnvnaxj>"There is comment that this sound driver doesn't work with 2.6.16 kernel! If so, then it's just a transient problem."
[10:07]<xru2rf>ciao
[10:07]<znvszznzdnz>i don't see an sb audigy using and intel chip driver
[10:07]<wjfs>yep, 2.6.8 doesn't have HD Audio support
[10:07]<znvszznzdnz>but i know nothing about your box
[10:07]<znvszznzdnz>s/and/an/
[10:07]<wjfs>jetscreamer: cause it is no audigy. ever seen an audigy in a notebook?
[10:07]<nnvnaxj>oh joy a new kernel
[10:07]<wjfs>it's HD audio aka azalia. the new intel onboard soundcard "standard"
[10:08]<nnvnaxj>must remember to change fstab and learn to change grub from hda4 to sda4
[10:09]<znvszznzdnz> Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy Advanced HD and a Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major ?
[10:09]<nnvnaxj>thats the drivers it gives me on the dell site when I input my service tag
[10:09]<znvszznzdnz>ah
