Log from #fedora at freenode 2006-06-07
[00:00]<mjmrq>+before, the install log would make note of that error and just keep going; now it kills the install; anyone know what that particular package does?
[00:00]<vj2yrsjnm>+kreg_dcdi: Does my solution work for you? (My box froze right after I posted it)
[00:01]<fyvnz>+Geren: it's entirely up to you. I prefer the more stability-oriented centos platform which has a 7 year lifecycle. fedora is more bleeding-edge oriented (which typically equates to less "stability" but that's not to say fedora isn't stable) and has a much shorter lifecycle. if you're ok with those differences, by all means, use fedora.
[00:01]<mjmrq>+i'm still moving backwards on my installation; the only difference from before, is that I'm moving backwards at a much higher rate of speed now; LOL
[00:01]<ggzgg>+hmm ok
[00:02]<ggzgg>+do i need to remove some of the services at startup to increase the performance , considering that it'll be running 24/7 as a webserver
[00:02]<wwjjms>+wirser: we know. libecal should get pushed tomorrow, probably. for now you can do: yum update --exclude=evolution --exclude=gnome-panel
[00:02]<ggzgg>+or will that make any difference
[00:02]<2u2uwuc>+u might do. dependes, what is running
[00:02]<fyvnz>+Geren: some people also choose fedora because, for reasons that I won't go into, they "require" newer versions of software, like php, mysql or postgresql for examples.
[00:02]<ggzgg>+well the thing is, i am not sure if some of the stuff is necessary or not
[00:02]<ggzgg>+hmm ok
[00:03]<errv>+Geren, if you're not ram-starved, don't worry about it
[00:03]<fyvnz>+Geren: if you don't need a service, it shouldn't be running. period.
[00:03]<ggzgg>+but i dunno if i need a certain service or not
[00:03]<ggzgg>+i mean i know the obvious ones like httpd, cron, etc etc
[00:03]<ggzgg>+but osme are not so obvious
[00:04]<mjmrq>+i got the original install through bit torrent
[00:04]<wyzsnz>+wwoods: thanks, problems with libecal?
[00:04]<2u2uwuc>+rather leave them as they r. lol. for obvious reasons.
[00:04]<fyvnz>+Geren: if you don't know what it is, google can usually tell you fairly quickly, if there's not an obvious man page pertaining to it.
[00:04]<ddq07q0oq>+HA ERROR: Your architecture, \'x86_64\', is not supported by the Macromedia Flash Player install
[00:04]<errv>+Geren, there's guides that you can google. stuff like NFS and apple rendevous (renamed to something else_ can be disabled.
[00:04]<ddq07q0oq>+so I am screwed
[00:04]<ggzgg>+hmm ok
[00:05]<fyvnz>+Geren: tldp.org also has some guides useful for sysadmins and getting to know the shell better
[00:05]<pzrrcr>+can nautilis access ftp sites?
[00:05]<fyvnz>+anyway, workday's over.. good night all
[00:06]<2u2uwuc>+night Fiver
[00:06]<ggzgg>+hmm ok
[00:06]<errv>+Fiver, heh, liv'n up to your name, 9-to-fiver
[00:06]<alwywnqw>+ ok I can send mail out, but not recieve it.. what do u think the issue is
[00:07]<2u2uwuc>+smtp server
[00:07]<2u2uwuc>+ops, other way round, pop
[00:07]<alwywnqw>+bubu1uk, I was just in squirrelmail settings, and it is set to sendmail
[00:07]<2u2uwuc>+if u use that
[00:07]<ggzgg>+what about windows server 2003
[00:07]<alwywnqw>+you mean imap?
[00:08]<2u2uwuc>+time to go guys, pub time. lol
[00:08]<2u2uwuc>+c u all later
[00:09]<mjmrq>+later bobu1uk
[00:11]<mjmrq>+maybe i will download a newer FC5, with bit torrent, and write another DVD, and try again; hopefully that one will have all of the pieces, including gnome-terminal working on it
[00:12]<xnysxyzj>+Aphixe2x, I think squirrelmail needs an IMAP server. Does your mail server has an Imap daemon listening?
[00:13]<alwywnqw>+Heishiro, dovecot
[00:13]<alwywnqw>+Heishiro, what ports do u need open? 25?
[00:14]<xnysxyzj>+Aphixe2x, 143 for imap if i remember correctly
[00:14]<xnysxyzj>+110 for POP
[00:14]<vj2yrsjnm>+yoda2: http://fedoraunity.org/news-archives/unity-respin5-20060523
[00:14]<xnysxyzj>+and 25 for smtp
[00:14]<xnysxyzj>+Aphixe2x, yep, 143 for imap
[00:15]<mjmrq>+thanks tobiasoed
[00:15]<mjmrq>+i will check it out right away
[00:16]<2zcnzs>+Everytime I dhcp it overwrites my /etc/resolve.conf. Is there a way I can tell it use some specific settings, regardless of what the DHCP server says
[00:16]<2zcnzs>+specifically I want to add a search domain...
[00:16]<errv>+Aphixe2x, also check out roundcube.net for a pertier webmail.
[00:16]<mzy>+i logged in via ssh to run some graphic programs for fc5, how do i run it so that the graphical interface is output to a monitor connected?
[00:17]<errv>+Aphixe2x, and of course, https-only for webmail.
[00:18]<wyzsnz>+thaks again and goodbye
[00:19]<alwywnqw>+Heishiro, the mail I sending to my box keeps bouncing back to me
[00:20]<xnysxyzj>+Aphixe2x, and the returned message should come with an error... What does it say?
[00:23]<drvn_dwy>+anyone have a synaptics touch pad that is working? what's the device in your xorg.conf file?
[00:23]<drvn_dwy>+I can't seem to get both the pad and the little knob working in FC5
[00:24]<alwywnqw>+Technical details of permanent failure:
[00:24]<alwywnqw>+PERM_FAILURE: DNS Error: Domain name not found
[00:25]<errv>+Aphixe2x, so... what's your domain
[00:26]<alwywnqw>+http://pastebin.com/763464 spydiex.dyndns.org
[00:26]<xnysxyzj>+Aphixe2x, you should check the domain name, and see if the DNS server is pointing to your box.
[00:27]<alwywnqw>+ httpd of that domain works
[00:28]<xnysxyzj>+Connections to your port 25 fails... It says connection refused
[00:28]<errv>+Aphixe2x, i think verizon blocks 25
[00:28]<xnysxyzj>+I get no response at all from 110 and 143
[00:29]<wwjjms>+yeah that's typical of verizon, they firewall that stuff
[00:29]<mjmrq>+tobiasoed - thanks for the URL; i'm getting the latest FC5 X386 bit torrent now; will write it and try to install it from the GUI mode and I will come back and let you know if X came up or if it could see my CD-ROM drive or LS-120 drive after it's all over
[00:29]<xnysxyzj>+maybe they are like my provider at home... The wont let me use the ports below 1024
[00:29]<errv>+Aphixe2x, btw - the alternate port is 587.
[00:29]<xnysxyzj>+I have to get to my account parameters (a web page) and there i can remove the protection.
[00:30]<xnysxyzj>+Cya all.. Gotta go.... Good luck Aphixe2x
[00:30]<alwywnqw>+zcat, if I open 587 do I need to edit smtp?
[00:31]<errv>+Aphixe2x, grep -R 587 /etc/mail/*
[00:42]<alwywnqw>+zcat, that only showed sendmail.mc:dnl the following causes to additionally listen to port 587
[00:43]<errv>+Aphixe2x, yeah? was just pointing you i the right direction
[00:43]<errv>+s/i/in
[00:43]<alwywnqw>+but is there something I need to change
[00:48]<vsfrufmno>+hey... quick question about yumex
[00:48]<vsfrufmno>+when looking at the Install view...
[00:48]<vsfrufmno>+the second column has icons on some of the packages....
[00:49]<vsfrufmno>+what's the icons mean?
[00:49]<mzy>+I'm from machine A ssh.. to machine B, how do i run a command like xterm, but have the window show up on B (assuming that B is logged in and started X already) ?
[00:50]<aar>+hi, is YUM the only way to automatically update my FC4 install?
[00:50]<aar>+better question might be ... what is the "best" way to do auto updates?
[00:51]<xmlxggrvgm>+jjg: yum is the recommended way
[00:51]<zdzfdgw>+I'm installing Wine from source because I had to apply a patch to the source code for a specific app and the instructions say to run
[00:52]<aar>+is there an "official" yum repo?
[00:52]<vj2yrsjnm>+MrY: you need to forward your X connection: ssh -X
[00:52]<aar>+hyphenated : thanks for the info
[00:52]<zdzfdgw>+depend && make, but it says no such command for depend (FC5)
[00:52]<zdzfdgw>+(sorry for the break, accidentally hit enter)
[00:54]<zdzfdgw>+should I just continue with make?
[00:57]<mzy>+tobiasoed: i still have to do X forwarding.. even if the program i'm executing is on the same system that I want the window to show up?
[00:58]<xrtnd>+smb:/// in nautilus does not show any of my windows shares... I remember it working in the past, but now that I actually need it something is wrong :P any idea what might be causing this?
