[14:22]<fyr2fn>xxyyzz: in your irc client type /exec -o cat /etc/network/interfaces
[14:23]<wwddee>Okay, I typed the nano thing and it said "This file describes the network..." I don't know how to get out of it :(
[14:23]<fyr2fn>ctrl+x
[14:24]<wwddee>Okay that worked, I elected not to save the modified buffer (I hope that's right)
[14:24]<wwddee>cat: /etc/network/interfaces: No such file or directory
[14:24]<wwddee>Okay ^ I didn't type that, I typed what you told me to type
[14:25]<wwddee>liable, my IRC client is X-chat, and it's on my powerbook (which works fine)... the iMac is the computer that has Debian, but there is no GUI that we can find at the moment :(
[14:25]<wwddee>We think it's because I only installed a minimal CD...
[14:25]<fyr2fn>xxyyzz: hah, ok so you arent irciing on the debian box?
[14:25]<wwddee>No I don't know how to :(
[14:26]<wwddee>I want to find the GUI first, heh
[14:26]<fyr2fn>heh, ok, no problem
[14:26]<fyr2fn>ok, vi /etc/network/interfaces
[14:26]<fyr2fn>wait
[14:26]<wwddee>Too late =/
[14:26]<wwddee>lol
[14:26]<wwddee>Should I type what it says?
[14:26]<fyr2fn>whats ifconfig -a show on the debian box?
[14:26]<fyr2fn>:q
[14:27]<vzrfrfr>liable: eth0 is up with dhcp
[14:27]<vzrfrfr>he just needs to have the interfaces line for the booting
[14:27]<fyr2fn>tralala: its already connected?
[14:27]<fyr2fn>oh sweet
[14:27]<vzrfrfr>yes
[14:27]<fyr2fn>xxyyzz: ok, vi /etc/network/interfaces
[14:28]<wwddee>It says some stuff up the top, down the bottom it says: "tc/network/interfaces already locked, session is read only; /etc/network/interfaces: unmodified, readonly: line 1"
[14:28]<fyr2fn>xxyyzz: grr, ok, :q
[14:31]<wwddee>Should I reboot it? That sometimes fixes things...
[14:31]<fyr2fn>no
[14:31]<wwddee>k
[14:31]<fyr2fn>xxyyzz: ps aux |grep vi how many lines?
[14:32]<wwddee>4
[14:33]<wwddee>One ends with "vi", two end with "vi /etc/network/interfaces" and one ends with "grep vi"
[14:33]<fyr2fn>pkill vi
[14:33]<wwddee>Okay, it didn't say anything, just went to the next line
[14:33]<fyr2fn>now ps aux again
[14:34]<wwddee>Just one, and it ends with "grep vi"
[14:34]<fyr2fn>good, vi /etc/network.interfaces
[14:34]<vzrfrfr>/
[14:35]<wwddee>etc/network.interfaces: new file: line 1"
[14:35]<vzrfrfr>:q
[14:35]<fyr2fn>spell it right :P
[14:35]<vzrfrfr>vi /etc/network/interfaces
[14:36]<fyr2fn>oh, heh, it was me that fucked the spelling.. haha
[14:36]<wwddee>I thought it might be wrong, but then I was like "Sssshhh... don't argue with these guys, they are a trillion times smarter than you."
[14:36]<wwddee>"And they are fixing your computer!"
[14:36]<fyr2fn>heh
[14:36]<fyr2fn>fat fingers..
[14:37]<wwddee>"etc/network/interfaces: unmodified: line 1"
[14:37]<wwddee>"This file describes the network interfaces available on your system and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5)"
[14:37]<vzrfrfr>xxyyzz: etc has to have / in front
[14:37]<wwddee>"The loopback network interface [newline], uto lo [newline], face lo inet loopback"
[14:37]<vzrfrfr>ok, ok
[14:37]<vzrfrfr>you are there
[14:38]<fyr2fn>anything about eth0
[14:38]<fyr2fn>?
[14:38]<wwddee>Not that I can see :(
[14:38]<vzrfrfr>xxyyzz: type /eth0
[14:38]<wwddee>I think the first character of each line is off the screen...
[14:38]<fyr2fn>first hit i
[14:38]<wwddee>'Cause before it was saying "oot", and I think it meant "root"
[14:38]<wwddee>I typed it, it put /eth0 at the top of the page, and moved everything else down one line
[14:38]<vzrfrfr>xxyyzz: can you adjust your display to fit the whole image?
[14:38]<fyr2fn>no
[14:39]<wwddee>tralala, it's an iMac, it doesn't have any display buttons :( The only way I used to be able to adjust it was through the "Monitors & Sound" control panel in OS 9.0
[14:39]<wwddee>I think I need the control panel to adjust the display =/
[14:39]<vzrfrfr>xxyyzz: maaaan
[14:40]<vzrfrfr>do you see eth0 now?
[14:40]<wwddee>I was hoping to adjust it with the Debian control panels...
