[17:54]<mdsvjldzgzzd>+kerframil: why not cp -Ra /home/x /home/y
[17:54]<ydxjvnl>-what's the difference between X and Virtual/X11 ?
[17:54]<cnzpzrdyf>+dystopianray: because the recursion option is superfluous when using the -a parameter
[17:55]<2jgsrycyvvgg>+imhotep, X is one implementation for virtual/X11
[17:55]<2jgsrycyvvgg>+imhotep, a virtual is a placeholder for multiple compatible packages
[17:55]<xjffjwsjuf>+hylje, emerge -pv gnome-panel u got +eds there?
[17:55]<2ljgv>-i'm configuring my kernel (gentoo sources)...the manual says to go into 'general setup' and choose 'support for hot-pluggable devices'...there is no such option under 'general setup'
[17:55]<xdfan>+yes
[17:55]<cnzpzrdyf>+dystopianray: also, that would move the directory x itsely into y as a sub-directory. nothing wrong with that but I don't think that's what he wants.
[17:55]<czsvzjgnvns>+kerframil: ok, great. -a it is and i'll do it in your suggested order, thanks
[17:56]<ydxjvnl>-bonsaikitten: ok, let me re-phrase that, then what's the difference between modular X and Virtual?
[17:56]<xdfan>+gnome terminal + irssi has problems with long lines it seems
[17:56]<2jgsrycyvvgg>+imhotep, the vitrual can be satisfied by X, a framebuffer or any other thing that allows to draw graphics
[17:56]<2jgsrycyvvgg>+imhotep, modular X is one specific program that does that
[17:57]<xjffjwsjuf>+hylje, emerge -a evolution-data-server
[17:57]<xdfan>+k
[17:57]<ydxjvnl>-bonsaikitten: k, thanks
[17:58]<cnzpzrdyf>+zezom: my guess is that you have >=groff-1.19 installed (or it is available). however, man-pages-ja only co-operates with 1.18. In that case you could try: echo ">=sys-apps/groff-1.19" >> /etc/portage/package.mask
[17:58]<cnzpzrdyf>+zezom: then, if you have groff-1.19 still installed, emerge --oneshot groff (which should downgrade it to 1.18)
[17:59]<cnzpzrdyf>+zezom: at that point the japanese manpages should install without complaint
[18:02]<cnzpzrdyf>+IceD^: 4.3 is keyword masked in gentoo. I'm guessing that's why ;)
[18:02]<2ljgv>-where does one configure support for sandisk flash drive into the kernel?
[18:02]<mdsvjldzgzzd>+IceD^: it's not going to link to a db version you don't have
[18:02]<dja|xjdn>+bpont: compact flash?
[18:03]<cnzpzrdyf>+IceD^: exactly
[18:03]<dja|xjdn>+bpont: or usb?
[18:03]<2ljgv>-doc|home:
[18:03]<dja|xjdn>+?
[18:03]<2ljgv>-doc|home: usb
[18:03]<dja|xjdn>+add usb mass devices support
[18:03]<cnzpzrdyf>+IceD^: stable is a relative term. when you're managing a package within the context of an entire distro (and db affects a *lot* of things dramatically) you can't just push it to stable because upstream says it's the best thing since sliced bread ;)
[18:04]<cnzpzrdyf>+IceD^: and what if 4.3 breaks somethinge else?
[18:04]<xdfan>+hmm
[18:04]<2ljgv>-doc|home: so mtd support is something entirely different and i don't need it
[18:04]<mdsvjldzgzzd>+IceD^: nothing is rboken in gentoo
[18:04]<mdsvjldzgzzd>+IceD^: recommendation != dependancy
[18:04]<cnzpzrdyf>+quite
[18:05]<cjppnnbuee>-so i guess you cant chroot from a x86 machine to a x86_64 one (amd64 really)
[18:05]<2jgsrycyvvgg>+CoffeeBuzz, no, only 64bit-->32 bit, not the other way around
[18:05]<mdsvjldzgzzd>+CoffeeBuzz: not if you're using 64-bit binaries on the amd64 machine
[18:05]<mdsvjldzgzzd>+IceD^: so stop bothering us and build it with that version :S
[18:05]<cjppnnbuee>-bugger. ah well.
[18:06]<cpufznrcnw>+emerge -uDN world want's to install faad2 and libmp4v
[18:06]<2ljgv>-is mtd support meant for embedded 'chip on disk' systems?
[18:06]<cpufznrcnw>+but they block each other
[18:06]<cnzpzrdyf>+IceD^: no, it's not "one of gentoo's patches". gentoo's maintainers have deemed db-4.2* to be the latest version that's safe to globally unmask at this present time. hence, subversion (among many other packages) will build against and will work absolutely fine.
[18:07]<xjffjwsjuf>+CPUFreak91, try emerge -uDNv --tree and see whats pullin in each package
[18:07]<mdsvjldzgzzd>+IceD^: is there an actual problem with using db-4.2 ?
[18:07]<cnzpzrdyf>+IceD^: as dystopianray has already said a recommendation does not mean that it's mandatory.
[18:08]<cpufznrcnw>+hollowsoul: ok. I'll try that
[18:08]<cnzpzrdyf>+IceD^: no, it shouldn't necessarily build against it (for the exact reason that I stated in my first response to you)
[18:09]<mdsvjldzgzzd>+IceD^: have you encountered any actual problem with subversion linking about db-4.2 ?f
[18:09]<cnzpzrdyf>+IceD^: if unmasking libfoo to satisfy a recommendation for appbar is not properly tested for the countless other apps that depend on libfoo then it's not acceptable just to push it to stable.
[18:10]<cnzpzrdyf>+IceD^: nor did the testers. so what's the beef? :)
[18:11]<cnzpzrdyf>+IceD^: no it won't. subversion has a specific dependency on =db-4.2* last time I checked. and db-4.3 isn't marked stable (not according to packages.gentoo.org anyway).
[18:12]<cnzpzrdyf>+IceD^: actually, I'm wrong - it only has a dep on =db-4*. but it should only bring in db-4.3 if you unmask it.
[18:13]<cnzpzrdyf>+yes, if you unmask the version of db in question
[18:13]<kueae>+hey, during installation, It detects my ethernet cable, but I cant get any internet still, like I can't ping or anything, any ideas?
[18:14]<kueae>+it shows all the eth0 stuff, I dont get an error, I just cant get any internet
[18:14]<mdsvjldzgzzd>+Kurcz: setup your network
[18:14]<2nnnnn>-hey guys, i've put an if function to run a shell file in .bash_profile, but it creates 2 processes, any reasons why?
[18:14]<rnmznwmra>-Zefiris: you here? its STILL updating
[18:14]<cpufznrcnw>+hollowsoul: Seems like ffmpeg wants faad2 and amaroK wants libmp4v
[18:14]<kueae>+it is
[18:14]<mdsvjldzgzzd>+Kurcz: there is a section in the handbook for setting up the network, follow it
[18:15]<mdsvjldzgzzd>+IceD^: file a bug report if you really think this is an issue
[18:15]<cpufznrcnw>+hollowsoul: Crap. xine-lib wants ffmpeg which wants faad2
[18:15]<cpufznrcnw>+hollowsoul: I wonder how i can get amarok to give up mp4v
[18:15]<cnzpzrdyf>+IceD^: quite possible. packages.gentoo.org doesn't always show up-to-date ChangeLogs and that's all that I have available at the moment. but I still don't see what the problem is. the main issue is when db changes in a manner where the underlying database no longer works properly. I've had that happen to me on one occasion when upgrading db and rebuilding subversion at a later date. but that's the nature of the beast and can be solved by dumping
[18:15]<cnzpzrdyf>+ the repo and re-importing it.
[18:16]<-- dvxn|syzzzyus xzs>http://www.bagdadsoftware.de")
[18:16]<cnzpzrdyf>+IceD^: as for cleanly installed system - it would work right off the bat
[18:17]<cnzpzrdyf>+IceD^: I still don't see what the exact problem is beyond the scenario I described and how you would intend to solve that. bugs have already been filed about this in the past.
[18:17]<kueae>+it is set up and it still doesnt work
[18:17]<kueae>+it shows my ip and everything
[18:18]<rmzyrrg>-how to check what xorg version you have?
[18:18]<cpufznrcnw>+hollowsoul: I fixed it. I needed to remove the aac use flag
[18:18]<cpufznrcnw>+hope it doesn't break anything
[18:18]<xjffjwsjuf>+kk
[18:18]<cpufznrcnw>+thanks!
[18:18]<agjg0ntn>-hmm how is it possible to use the emerge genkern with a previus release?
[18:18]<cnzpzrdyf>+IceD^: what do you mean when you say ~? a "testing" system using an ~arch keyword?
[18:18]<agjg0ntn>-seems to be a bug with the latest one on my fileserver
[18:18]<2nnnnn>-hey guys, i've put an if function to run a shell file in .bash_profile according to certain rules, once executed on startup it creates 2 processes, any reasons why?
[18:19]<xdfan>+hmm
[18:19]<cnzpzrdyf>+IceD^: I thought you said that db-4.3 had been marked stable anyway ...
[18:19]<dtgjzd>+hmm, when trying to do grub-install /dev/hda i get the error df: Warning: cannot read table of mounted filesystems: no such file or directory and .... could not find device for /boot: not found or not a block device.... ideas?
[18:19]<rmzyrrg>-does someone know how to check what version xorg you have exactly
[18:19]<cnzpzrdyf>+IceD^: right
[18:19]<xdfan>+how do i enable mouse4 for X?
[18:19]<xdfan>+(thats the 'back' button usually)
[18:20]<rmzyrrg>-can someone tell me that single command to check what xorg version you have?
[18:21]<lupveyr>+how do I see the output of mpc contiously?
[18:21]<2fun2yzm__>+emerge -pv xorg-x11
[18:21]<cjjffdrg>+Adriaan: Xorg -version
[18:21]<asvpyfjv>-does anyone know how to turn the screen back on, on a dell laptop after you've shut the lid?
[18:21]<rmzyrrg>-koollman, thanks :)
[18:22]<sgggvy>+Luftzig: |tail -f
[18:22]<mdsvjldzgzzd>+cstPilot: you'll need vbetool
[18:22]<cnzpzrdyf>+IceD^: I see your point. I suppose one solution would be to change the dep to <db-4.3 in the subversion ebuild at this stage
