[20:48]<kduu>B-Minus: rc-status will tell you what didnt start properly
[20:48]<b-mygus>everything started ok regarding rcstatus
[20:48]<kduu>B-Minus: if its in default or boot and its not running it should be.. then depending on the service you can find log files in /var/log
[20:48]<kduu>B-Minus: then you shouldnt have had any errors
[20:48]<b-mygus>well i have
[20:48]<kduu>or any fatal errors
[20:48]<b-mygus>like
[20:48]<wucrvu>bonsaikitten: uhm... thanks. But then the fix didn't go right. The package release number should have been increased, so that the locally cached packages were rejected
[20:49]<b-mygus>could not set font
[20:49]<b-mygus>and then it tries like 30 lines to set the font
[20:49]<kduu>B-Minus: its not fatal stuff
[20:49]<wucrvu>bonsaikitten: else emerge will keep complaining until you remove the package, and trust the one on the net (which somebody might have in theory corrupted)
[20:49]<b-mygus>not fatal but it all slows down my bootprocess
[20:49]<drdrg>bonsaikitten, do you know why vmware only work when i login as root?
[20:49]<2jgsrycyvvgg>xukatu, that's why we're working on signing all ebuilds
[20:49]<wucrvu>good
[20:50]<2jgsrycyvvgg>mcman, known bug, check bugzilla
[20:50]<kduu>B-Minus: check your /etc/conf.d/consolefont
[20:50]<b-mygus>ok tnx
[20:50]<kduu>mcman: its a matter of chmodding the exectable
[20:50]<kduu>erm.. executable
[20:51]<2jgsrycyvvgg>mcman, http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=70021
[20:52]<kduu>i hope they get full usb emulation working on qemu soon, that would rock
[20:52]<2jgsrycyvvgg>Kyuu, same here, open source > * ;-)
[20:52]<kduu>you betcha
[20:52]<kduu>its godlike!
[20:52]<kduu>oh.. could someone tell me where i can find ebuilds that are evil old version?
[20:53]<kduu>like.. enemy-territory-2.60
[20:53]<kduu>with its expoit/vunerability
[20:53]<mrvvmnvwqw>hey, just curious, after upgrading gcc (major version), do I really need to emerge -e world (as said in the gentoo gcc upgrade guide), or is running revdep-rebuild safe enough?
[20:53]<2jgsrycyvvgg>Kyuu, sources.gentoo.org I think
[20:53]<kduu>mattdev121: emerge -e world is best iirc
[20:54]<tjddw>What apps will I need on a laptop for general work? So far I have abiword, gnumeric, magicpoint, the gimp and firefox
[20:54]<2jgsrycyvvgg>mattdev121, revdep should be enough, but if you can spare the time run emerge -e
[20:54]<kduu>bonsaikitten: you rock.. i forgot about sources.gentoo.org
[20:54]<mrvvmnvwqw>ok, so far kopete won't load, but i've got about 900 packages so i'd like to avoid -e world as much as i can
[20:54]<mrvvmnvwqw>thanks
[20:54]<zjznztt>TomM1, how could we know what work you do?
[20:55]<wucrvu>bonsaikitten: mattdev121: if you're short of time, it might just be possible to install the compat libraries of stdc++
[20:55]<wucrvu>or am I wrong?
[20:55]<kduu>mattdev121: you can avoid it... but it would watch out if stuff starts acting funny
[20:55]<tjddw>roger55: just like stuff ill need for college
[20:55]<wucrvu>mattdev121: you can go rebuilding all stuff while time goes
[20:55]<2jgsrycyvvgg>xukatu, gcc upgrade guide ...
[20:55]<wucrvu>bonsaikitten: I know that guide, and followed it, but I've got experience with gcc updates that aren't meant to be major and still break apis =)
[20:55]<zjznztt>TomM1, I guess a pdf reader is handy.
[20:56]<wucrvu>bonsaikitten: and I found a few temporary solutions
[20:56]<tjddw>ooo
[20:56]<ajsww>TomM1: yes, OOo is probably better than abiword
[20:57]<kduu>TomM1: i found it easiest to emerge stuff as i needed it in college
[20:57]<kduu>TomM1: there is no shortage of internet connections
[20:57]<ajsww>TomM1, well, depending on how much memory the laptop has, that is. what are the specs?
[20:57]<wucrvu>bonsaikitten: sometimes major gcc upgrades don't go right, as some packages don't build (c++ is code is never fully ansi)
[20:57]<2jgsrycyvvgg>xukatu, yes, I've been having fun with that for quite some time
[20:57]<wucrvu>which means you either keep compatibility libraries for those libs, or you're screwed up
[20:57]<tjddw>coshx: 300mhz 128mb ram
[20:57]<2jgsrycyvvgg>always bleeding edge ;-)
[20:57]<kduu>xukatu: sadly, there is alot of code that isnt ANSI compliant.. :/
[20:58]<wucrvu>bonsaikitten: I had to, to make sure my few apps build with future versions too
[20:58]<mrvvmnvwqw>damn, revdep-rebuild didn't find ANYTHING :( looks like i'll be rebuilding over the next few days
[20:58]<ajsww>TomM1: yeah, then i wouldn't suggest doing a full blown kde install. if you have a desktop, consider using distcc for the emerges.
[20:59]<-- dvxn|syzzzyus xzs>http://www.bagdadsoftware.de")
[20:59]<okox>hi
[20:59]<tjddw>coshx: no way, e17 all the way
[21:00]<kduu>TomM1: hehe, good stuff
[21:00]<okox>i ve searched in google for the solution of my problem but i havent succeded in it, the problem is: .checking for KDE... configure: error:
[21:00]<okox>in the prefix, you've chosen, are no KDE headers installed. This will fail.
[21:00]<okox>So, check this please and use another prefix
[21:00]<tjddw>Kyuu: and i might use archlinux
[21:00]<kduu>OKOX: what are your use flags for your emerge?
[21:00]<kduu>TomM1: :/
[21:00]<tjddw>everyone persuade me not to!
[21:01]<ajsww>TomM1: a good text editor will also be necessary (either vi or emacs) and gnuplot will probably be useful. unless you use distcc, you probably want all the packages emerged before you need them so you don't have to wait a day when you want them (in that respect, you might want to consider a distro like ubuntu where you don't have to compile everything)
[21:01]<kduu>TomM1: drown yourself for me, or just dont talk about it :D
[21:01]<okox>Kyuu, you wnat i paste all of the flags on make..conf ?
[21:01]<kduu>no
[21:02]<kduu>emerge -pv *package* and paste that
[21:02]<kduu>only the line with the package and its flags
[21:02]<okox>no its not on an emerge paket
[21:02]<okox>i am compiling it manualy
[21:02]<kduu>then no support for you
[21:02]<kduu>thats your own problem.. and very very messy
[21:02]<kduu>youll break something in no time
[21:03]<tjddw>Kyuu: im not looking forward to gentoo compile times
[21:03]<ajsww>OKOX: there's no ebuild for the app you're trying to compile?
[21:03]<okox>Kyuu, this package is not in portage
[21:03]<kduu>TomM1: then dont use gentoo
[21:03]<kduu>OKOX: what package is it?
[21:03]<kduu>im betting someone has already made an ebuild for it
[21:03]<kduu>its very likely
[21:04]<nfsxrr>I can figure out to do something really simple : find all hidden files recursively in a dir.
[21:04]<nfsxrr>s/can/can't/
[21:04]<kduu>elshaa: find . -iname .*
[21:04]<svuup>find / -name '.*'
[21:04]<kduu>elshaa: maybe a -type f in there too
[21:04]<kduu>if you want files only
[21:04]<nfsxrr>cool. thanks
[21:05]<nfsxrr>yes
[21:05]<svuup>don't you have to quote the '.*' ?
