[00:00]<ezzj>_AxS_: "You may also be interested in media-video/nvidia-settings"? :o
[00:00]<_aws_>ErZo, ? i didn't see that in the howto
[00:00]<v|ee>transparent aterm or wterm are black in the background in kde... which terminal-emulator has nice transparency under kde, but isn't as slow as konsole?
[00:00]<dzzcjz>dave, DRI is open source, I've set up the closed ati-drivers today...
[00:00]<dzzcjz>dave, which card do you have?
[00:00]<2nf2jenn>_AxS_: I've got a Volcano 9 cranked up to Max, but it's still giving errors
[00:00]<ezzj>_AxS_: when compiling nvidia-drivers, it is displayed down that. :-O
[00:00]<ezzj>_AxS_: I'll see if i got the module now.
[00:00]<mrvn>markoa ati radeon xpress 200m
[00:00]<zjznztt>Belboz99, is it dusty?
[00:00]<2nf2jenn>I've also got 2x 80mm fans and 1x 120mm fan
[00:01]<2nf2jenn>roger55: I don't think so, i try to keep it pretty clean
[00:01]<zgzzaxwsv>i do have to run the nvidida-conf or whatever again now right?
[00:01]<mrvn>but i want 3d accel
[00:01]<dzzcjz>dave, um that's a bit old right? because dri doesn't support newer cards
[00:01]<_aws_>ErZo, ah ok
[00:01]<mrvn>markoa, dont know, it got it 2 weeks ago
[00:02]<mrvn>ive read the forums, and ppl have got it running
[00:02]<zgzzaxwsv>im afraid of rebooting my system now..
[00:02]<2nf2jenn>Currently 89F here, but I have no AC :(
[00:02]<dzzcjz>dave, well did you buy it or got it from someone?
[00:02]<mdfyw>;(
[00:02]<dzzcjz>dave, I mean, used
[00:02]<_aws_>Belboz99, carry it right in front of your AC and take the case off
[00:02]<_aws_>oh wait
[00:03]<ezzj>_AxS_: uh oh, I think I might know what's wrong. I saw that xorg was saying "FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (lib~~kernel/video.nvidia.ko) Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter, see dmesg." I did a dmesg and got 6 lines of "nvidia: Unknown symbol i2c_del_adapter" and "nvidia: Uknown Symboc i2c_add_adapter" :-O!
[00:03]<_aws_>Belboz99, iirc there's a way to step-down your cpu speed...
[00:03]<mrvn>markoa, im stumped
[00:03]<_aws_>ErZo, that seems strange...
[00:03]<_aws_>ErZo, what kernel you got?
[00:03]<ezzj>_AxS_: Yes, indeed very.
[00:03]<dzzcjz>dave, did you read http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ATI_Drivers ?
[00:03]<ezzj>_AxS_: x86_64.
[00:03]<_aws_>ErZo, oh, and all the 'nv' stuff is turned off in the kernel, yes? (along with drm)?
[00:03]<ezzj>_AxS_: 2.6.16-313
[00:03]<mrvnd>back
[00:03]<ezzj>r13*
[00:03]<mrvnd>sorry markoa
[00:04]<ezzj>_AxS_: 2.6.16-gentoo-r13*
[00:04]<zjznztt>_AxS_, you compiled against sources that don't match the configuration of your running kernel?
[00:04]<zjznztt>er ErZo ^
[00:04]<_aws_>also a possibility
[00:04]<ezzj>roger55: I don't know.. :-P
[00:04]<_aws_>ErZo, the latest compile of your kernel, is definitely the one you're running?
[00:04]<zjznztt>ErZo, check with 'uname -a' time and date
[00:04]<mrvn>well
[00:04]<2nf2jenn>_AxS_: that would help if I could lower the CPU speed, but I need to do it from the GUI as I'm emerging gnome. I'm currently overclocked by about 200Mhz on an AMD 2500+
[00:05]<2nf2jenn>oops, 400Mhz
[00:05]<ezzj>Well, i had a time-scew. Does that matter, roger55 and _AxS_ ?
[00:05]<_aws_>Belboz99, well theres your problem -- dont overclock! :D
[00:05]<ezzj>Belboz99: Overclocking brings heat, alot of it too. :P
[00:05]<2nf2jenn>_AxS, I was in the process of getting it stable at a lower voltage when I trashed my OS and had to start over
[00:05]<vzgdndzz>unless you can overclock at standard voltage
[00:05]<dznw2zcnz_stzzdo>ErZo ohlord, california does not need any more heat
[00:06]<_aws_>ErZo, easiest way to fix that would be to recompile and reinstal the kernel.. at leas then you're sure.
[00:06]<2nf2jenn>vandemar: I'm actually undervolted, I was testing to see how far down I could go when my OS got trashed
[00:06]<mrvn>"no drivers availible"
[00:06]<mrvn>"no drivers available"
[00:06]<_aws_>ErZo, shouldn't take long to do
[00:06]<gnpzzyjuswnw>Hi guys. Possibly the most flameable q i've ever asked... Is there a way of getting some kind of progress indicator of an individual compile?
[00:06]<ezzj>_AxS_: So, just for the heck of beeing sure? :-)
[00:06]<dzzcjz>dave, ?
[00:06]<ezzj>_AxS_: Should I maybe try to locate i2c thing?
[00:07]<dznw2zcnz_stzzdo>Belboz99 That is the reason (insert deity of yourchoice) invented the stage4 backup
[00:07]<_aws_>ErZo, nono its a kernel symbol thing
[00:07]<mrvn>markoa, thats the error i get when i startx
[00:07]<ezzj>_AxS_: Alright :-O
[00:07]<_aws_>ErZo, essentially you can either play around with your config settings and files and try and mix and match, or you can just make && make modules_install && cp -a arch/x86_64/boot/bzImage /boot/file && reboot && emerge nvidia-drivers
[00:08]<_aws_>ErZo, its a lot less hastle to do the second one
[00:08]<ezzj>_AxS_: I'll recompile and see if it changes anything. Otherwise I'll play around I guess. :P
[00:08]<_aws_>ErZo, it should fix your issue
[00:08]<dzzcjz>dave, what did you put in VIDEO_CARDS (in make.conf) ?
[00:08]<mrvn>Distro^Junkie, im following that guide
[00:08]<2nf2jenn>Okay, so this error has occurred twice now while trying to emerge gnome-python-desktop-2.14.0
[00:08]<2nf2jenn>metacity.c:882: error: `META_CURSOR_MOVE_WINDOW' undeclared (first use in this function)
[00:08]<ezzj>_AxS_: Alright, brb then :-)
[00:09]<mrvn>VIDEO_CARDS="fglrx"
[00:09]<lzzs_g>Compile compile, while debian downloads and downloads, who will win, who will, indeed
[00:09]<2nf2jenn>As well as: metacity.c:883: error: `META_CURSOR_RESIZE_WINDOW' undeclared (first use in this function)
[00:09]<mrvn>can i put more than one entry to that variable?
[00:09]<_aws_>ErZo, if you dont mind waiting, it might be good to add a 'localversion' to the kernel config so you _know_ youve installed it right on next bootup
[00:09]<dzzcjz>dave, yes
[00:09]<ezzj>_AxS_: what do you mean with "localversion"? ;O
[00:09]<mrvn>and it wont take away the chances of me getting 3d accel?
[00:09]<mrvn>lol
[00:10]<lzvzyaca>I copied some files from my windows drive to linux as root
[00:10]<lzvzyaca>and now I cant even access the files as my normal user
[00:10]<mrvn>Distro^Junkie, no ati?
[00:10]<lzvzyaca>and I chmodded the directory they are in
[00:10]<lzvzyaca>how might I chmod EVERYTHING
[00:10]<_aws_>ErZo, General Setup -> Local Version .. its a string you type thats appended to the version stuff in the kernel.
[00:10]<2nf2jenn>patrickj: , you need to chown the files in that directory
[00:10]<mrvn>recursive
[00:10]<lzvzyaca>because there are more directories with sub directories etc.
[00:10]<mrvn>patrickj, chmod -R
[00:10]<lzvzyaca>dave: example?
[00:11]<ezzj>_AxS_: And why should I add one? ;P
[00:11]<2nf2jenn>patrickj: chown will change the ownership of the files, right now root owns them, you want you to own them
