[00:03]<pfd2rac>think I will celebrate getting this server partially running by going out for a bit, talk to some ladies
[00:33]<d9vn_g>can high CPU levels damage the CPU?
[00:34]<vzyppym_hugvnz>levels of what?
[00:34]<d9vn_g>CPU usage
[00:34]<vzyppym_hugvnz>only if your cooling isn't done correctly
[00:35]<d9vn_g>my hard disk's DMA is dead and i have to take it back so i have to back it up
[00:35]<d9vn_g>50gb in PIO mode
[00:35]<vzyppym_hugvnz>higher usage causes higher heat dissipation, and excess heat easily destroys silicon
[00:35]<d9vn_g>at like 16mb/s and 99% cpu usage
[00:35]<vzyppym_hugvnz>ow
[00:35]<vzyppym_hugvnz>yeah that's what no dma does.. the cpu isn't really working hard though
[00:35]<vzyppym_hugvnz>just lots of waiting for the drive
[00:35]<d9vn_g>k
[00:36]<d9vn_g>cuz i plugged in another hard disk.. dma worked
[00:36]<d9vn_g>so im guessing its a messed up hard disk
[00:36]<d9vn_g>and im gonna send it back
[00:36]<vzyppym_hugvnz>most likely.. what brand?
[00:36]<d9vn_g>seagate
[00:36]<d9vn_g>:s
[00:36]<d9vn_g>it was a 300gb for $140 Canadian
[00:36]<d9vn_g>it looked like a good deal
[00:37]<vzyppym_hugvnz>yeah usually they're pretty good.. maybe just a random dud
[00:37]<d9vn_g>yea
[00:37]<vzyppym_hugvnz>if it was maxtor i'd have laughed at you ;)
[00:37]<d9vn_g>why?
[00:38]<vzyppym_hugvnz>because they rarely make it past 3 weeks
[00:38]<d9vn_g>oh
[00:38]<d9vn_g>haha
[00:38]<d9vn_g>my 80gb is maxtor
[00:38]<d9vn_g>it actually lasted 2 years so far
[00:38]<d9vn_g>maybe more
[00:39]<d9vn_g>2.5 years actually
[00:39]<vzyppym_hugvnz>wow you're lucky
[00:39]<vzyppym_hugvnz>might be one of those rebadged quantums
[00:44]<d9vn_g>lol
[00:52]<byve>is there a way to create a bootable image cd of current running state of system so it can be use for system recovery?
[00:55]<vzyppym_hugvnz>Bitz: yep, although don't expect to have your environment run off the cd without a lot of messing around
[01:27]<d9vn_g>RAM is fairly universal??
[01:29]<vzyppym_hugvnz>D4ve_G: umm no it's only known to be available on one small planet in the universe so far
[01:29]<d9vn_g>do you know the name and location of that planet?
[01:30]<vzyppym_hugvnz>:P
[01:34]<slcjd2>http://zapotek.paivola.fi/~terom/pictures/upsi_edesta.JPG
[01:35]<gplgnnc>SpComb, i had that up system
[01:35]<gplgnnc>I miss it
[01:35]<gplgnnc>it was so heavy nobody could steal it
[01:35]<slcjd2>heh
[01:36]<gplgnnc>the batteries ran out
[01:36]<gplgnnc>died
[01:36]<slcjd2>I got it off ebay (refurbished) for 303 euros
[01:36]<gplgnnc>new ones are..... expensive
[01:36]<slcjd2>brand new batteries
[01:36]<gplgnnc>300 E just for the batteries
[01:36]<slcjd2>and a years warranty
[01:36]<slcjd2>hmm
[01:36]<gplgnnc>or actually probably 200E
[01:36]<slcjd2>they last 3-4 years, don't they?
[01:36]<gplgnnc>10
[01:37]<gplgnnc>depends
[01:37]<slcjd2>3-4 years minimum, I guess
[01:37]<slcjd2>10 years seems a bit high. Possible of course, if you don't abuse them
[01:37]<gplgnnc>The one I got was a slightly earlier model, I think it was made in the early 90s, finally died in 2005
[01:38]<gplgnnc>If the heat is low, and you don't rely on the battery much (constantly plugged in) and sometimes have it reset it can last a LONG time
[01:38]<slcjd2>mm, this is a slightly old model
[01:38]<gplgnnc>sometimes it's actually good to run it down to no power and then charge it up again
[01:38]<gplgnnc>it can actually make it reset
[01:39]<slcjd2>my parents did that once already
[01:39]<vzyppym_hugvnz>GPLGeek: that should only work with ni-cad batteries
[01:39]<slcjd2>our two computers ran for like 4 hours on it
[01:39]<gplgnnc>Mine was removed in 2001 from a printing place that used it in HOT environments.
[01:39]<slcjd2>it's apparetly not too good for them
[01:40]<gplgnnc>Triffid_Hunter, when it started giving me the orange light and the beeping I ran it down because the sensor in the machine, not the battery, cared
[01:40]<gplgnnc>the system did not know what level to expect
[01:40]<gplgnnc>I only did it once and it seemed to work
[01:40]<gplgnnc>made it last a few more years
[01:41]<gplgnnc>SpComb, they had contracts and licences, once the company changed their name and parent company they had to switch
[01:42]<slcjd2>dunno where mine comes from
[01:42]<gplgnnc>just like how old factories use unix machines made by generic companies and then a new company takes it over and they have a contract with dell so they have to get rid of the old machines and replace them with those darn overheating ugly thin boxes
[01:42]<slcjd2>but it has brand new batteries
[01:42]<slcjd2>which is all I care about
[01:42]<slcjd2>heh
[01:42]<gplgnnc>the point is, that thing is a tank
[01:42]<gplgnnc>it will last forever
[01:43]<gplgnnc>every 6-9 years replace battery
[01:44]<slcjd2>I think that if the battery lasts for long enough I'll spend the money and replace it
[01:44]<slcjd2>as long as I don't sell it... however, I don't think I'll part with it too fast...
[01:44]<gplgnnc>I was very surprised, how long it kept my pc up and running after power went out
[01:44]<slcjd2>heh, it's kind of useless for a single PC
[01:45]<gplgnnc>I had my modem, computer, monitor, speakers, clock on it. It kept me running for hours
[01:45]<slcjd2>I mean to plug > 1 pc into it
[01:45]<slcjd2>2200 W = lots of PCs
[01:45]<slcjd2>mine has this really evil whiney 80mm fan
[01:45]<gplgnnc>but if you have that on a home-system.... it rocks
[01:45]<gplgnnc>oh mine was silent
[01:45]<slcjd2>I want to change it for a new one, but that might void the warranty...
[01:45]<gplgnnc>it did blow some cool air on my feet which was kind of cool.
[01:45]<gplgnnc>in the summer
[01:46]<slcjd2>probably not relly intended for a home system
