[00:03]<pfd2rac>let me know if you find anything
[00:03]<pfd2rac>I gotta get back to this job
[00:03]<zznlvzuvx>ok, thanks for the info
[00:04]<zznlvzuvx>will tell you later on, thanks, cya
[00:32]<-- dvxn|syzzzyus xzs>http://www.bagdadsoftware.de")
[01:12]<lzlvjlbzzyg>is going to take one of these out of its plastic covering and mount it inside my pc case so it can sample the temperature of my pc components -> http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7560951347&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1 ... i dont have room for one of those 5.25" 'fan controller' units in my case so im building my own smaller temp sensor unit that will fit ;)
[01:23]<dx_fn>hey anyone here with an ipod?
[01:24]<hjfgfgssggss>old one, yes
[01:27]<dx_fn>I just bought an ipod and the battery is running out faster then specified... I've been playing for about 3 hrs and it's already at 50% (the specs say it should run for 14 hrs)
[01:28]<hjfgfgssggss>does seem rather fast
[01:28]<hjfgfgssggss>I assume it was fully charged to begin with?
[01:28]<pfd2rac>uhh
[01:28]<pfd2rac>did you charge it for 16 hrs before you used it the first time
[01:28]<pfd2rac>YOU STUPID CANUCK
[01:29]<pfd2rac>oh it was mh_le
[01:29]<pfd2rac>nm
[01:29]<hjfgfgssggss>gj
[01:29]<dx_fn>Hopelessness: yes
[01:29]<pfd2rac>you charged it yourself
[01:30]<dx_fn>flyback: the manual said it should be charged for 3-4 hrs to start with
[01:30]<pfd2rac>ok
[01:30]<pfd2rac>hmmm
[01:30]<dx_fn>and I did
[01:30]<hjfgfgssggss>mh_le: just playing audio?
[01:30]<dx_fn>Hopelessness: yeah
[01:36]<hjfgfgssggss>certainly are playing methods that use it up faster than others, still shouldn't be 6 hours total
[01:41]<dx_fn>it seems that It can sometimes take a few "charge cycles" for the iPod battery to work fully.
[01:42]<lzlvjlbzzyg>mh_le: was it a 2nd hand ipod?
[01:42]<dx_fn>no brand new
[01:42]<lzlvjlbzzyg>i find this 14 hour estimate odd
[01:42]<lzlvjlbzzyg>because i get nearer 30 out of my 3rd gen ipod
[01:43]<lzlvjlbzzyg>20gb model
[01:43]<lzlvjlbzzyg>maybe its also down to the volume you have it set to play at, and the format and compression ratio of your music
[01:43]<dx_fn>well the 5g ipod has a larger screen, maybe that's why?
[01:43]<lzlvjlbzzyg>in their specs theyll say that the battery life stats are for a certain type of music file of a certain size and compression ratio... which effects cpu consumption and how often the drive spins up
[01:44]<lzlvjlbzzyg>im assuming they made their measurement with m4a's as they expect you to buy music from itunes (yuck)
[01:44]<lzlvjlbzzyg>i play mp3's, so maybe theyre less cpu intensive
[01:45]<hjfgfgssggss>Biggest thing is probably whether or not you're playing from a playlist/album straight or just skipping around
[01:45]<hjfgfgssggss>Since the HD gets spun up substancially more if you're just skipping around
[01:46]<lzlvjlbzzyg>yeah it might pre-cache an album or playlist in ram
[01:46]<hjfgfgssggss>yeah, it does
[01:46]<lzlvjlbzzyg>also an easy way to drain the battery of an ipod in record time is by over use of the skip button :p
[01:46]<lzlvjlbzzyg>also the 'music quiz' game, i drained the battery from full to flat in an hour by playing that
[01:47]<lzlvjlbzzyg>backlight can be a power hog, too... but not unless its set to 'always on'
[01:47]<dx_fn>I mostly play albums...
[01:48]<dx_fn>but I found out in the forums that it might take a few charge cycles to reach it's fill capasity...
[01:51]<sussumyj>would anyone happen to know if i can use ethernet UTP in a token ring network?
[01:54]<hjfgfgssggss>mh_le: Yeah, might give it a few charge cycles then see how it does
[01:54]<dx_fn>yeah
[02:37]<vzggv>What do you think about buying open box ram?
[02:37]<vzggv>http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820141164R
[02:47]<menre>is the WD Raptor 150 worth it for servers, or are the latest Seagate drives close enough in performance that the price and size differences make up for it?
[03:00]<fmjv>depends what you're looking at with your server
[03:02]<menre>yea its a balance... the answer im really looking for is how big a difference is it these days?
[03:02]<menre>raptors used to have a huge performance lead... is that lead still large or just minor now that 7200 drives are getting really good
[03:02]<menre>?
[03:08]<2zyac>MrNaz, why don't you compare the seek times...
[03:08]<2zyac>or some more detailed benchmarks if you care a lot
[03:09]<menre>brick because published seek times and benchmarks are quite useless... i'm looking for real world experience with the drives
[03:10]<menre>and i unfortunately cant afford to buy an array of them to test
[03:10]<menre>so i was hoping someone else had had an opportunity to use them in a real world setting and could comment on their performance from their observations
[03:16]<2zyac>maybe a major benchmarking site, probably not any of the individuals in here
[03:18]<menre>k
[03:21]<fmjv>well.. I have experience with both, but it's hard to give any recommendation when I don't know what you're trying to do with a server
[03:22]<fmjv>I've been running datasiloses, small clusters, emergency suspend storage servers etc
[03:22]<fmjv>and for each of those tasks you need slightly different hardware solution
[04:25]<ludl>hi i need help with a Pinnacle PCTV Stereo
[04:34]<ludl>is anybody here?
[04:35]<2zyac>pump, do you have a question?
[04:35]<xjzfnv>Okay, I have a problem. A friend of mine has been having some problems with her computer. (Windows, not sure about hardware). Anyways, the screen would go black and the computer would shut off. She upgraded the drivers and it was working perfectly, but now they don't work and the USB doesn't pick up stuff. Won't even be detected. When she tries to force it, it says "device not ready". Hardware problem? Windows reinstall needed?
[04:35]<ludl>yes brick
[04:35]<ludl>i'm trying to make my pinnacle pctv stereo work
[04:36]<2zyac>...
[04:36]<ludl>i don't have signal
[04:36]<ludl>i think there is some trouble with the module and the tuner
[04:37]<2zyac>that's usually the trouble
[04:37]<ludl>i've checked the list with the tuners
[04:37]<2zyac>i would get the capture working with composite in first, then worry about the tuner
[04:37]<ludl>but the one that should be doesn't work
[04:38]<ludl>yes, its working
[04:39]<2zyac>did you read the numbers on the microchips to identify the tuner?
[04:40]<ludl>i read it from pinnacle's website
[04:40]<ludl>this should be the tuner
[04:40]<ludl>tuner=33 - MT20xx universal
[04:40]<ludl>i've also read in ubuntu forum of people who make this card work with that tuner
[04:40]<2zyac>i think you need to make sure it has the same chip
[04:41]<2zyac>the reason this is complicated is that similar capture cards were made with many different tuners
[04:41]<mrxmjum>hello
[04:42]<mrxmjum>any idea what keymap to select on gentoo linux for ibm thinkpad x60s laptop keyboard?
[04:42]<ludl>so i should take out the card and see what tuner does it have?
[04:43]<xjzfnv>Try just going for your normal one, Mahmoud.
[04:43]<2zyac>pump, that is my recommendation. i think mine is a philips one.
[04:45]<xjzfnv>Any ideas on my friend's hardware problem above?
[04:45]<ludl>brick, i have something here
[04:45]<ludl>what's the pastebin's url?
[04:49]<ludl>here i found it
[04:49]<ludl>brick: when you can please take a look http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/16968
