[00:19]<sjfrdrwzzryrr>Are there any VM's for Linux that will run WinXP + soure games with no problems?
[00:19]<sjfrdrwzzryrr>Most seem to lack 3d accel
[00:23]<slcjd2>cedega?
[00:45]<sjfrdrwzzryrr>VM
[00:46]<sjfrdrwzzryrr>Cedega is a really crappy emulator
[00:46]<sjfrdrwzzryrr>VM != emulator
[01:15]<jrlsu>cedega is not an emulator
[01:15]<jrlsu>it's a compatibility layer
[01:22]<sjfrdrwzzryrr>Its still incredibly slow and useless
[02:10]<jdprlrdn> guys i have sli , and my master card hit 125 degrees celcius!
[02:10]<jdprlrdn>i exited to desktop, and it still hovered aroun d90 degrees
[02:10]<jdprlrdn>could this be caused by anything EXCEPT a broken fan?
[02:13]<svjzc>have you overclocked it?
[02:13]<svjzc>a lot?
[02:13]<jdprlrdn>well, i am ocing it.. but it was running fine
[02:13]<jdprlrdn>at those temps
[02:13]<jdprlrdn>now all of a sudden it just spikes major
[02:14]<jdprlrdn>it happened once, but i had to leave right away for a trip
[02:14]<jdprlrdn>so i cant check if the fan is spinning
[02:14]<jdprlrdn>:/
[02:14]<svjzc>sure you can
[02:14]<svjzc>open up the case and take a peek
[02:14]<jdprlrdn>well, when i get home
[02:14]<jdprlrdn>i can
[02:14]<jdprlrdn>im not at the pc
[02:14]<svjzc>oh right
[02:14]<svjzc>you'll have to wait
[02:15]<jdprlrdn>assuming it runs ok whe i reboot, should i evne keep the gpu?
[02:15]<jdprlrdn>if it has reached 125
[02:15]<jdprlrdn>is it possible physical damage has occured?
[02:15]<svjzc>very unlikely
[02:15]<jdprlrdn>the cutoff temp for my card is 125
[02:15]<jdprlrdn>in the bios
[02:15]<svjzc>GPU's can get a lot hotter then CPU's
[02:15]<jdprlrdn>then it clocks down
[02:16]<jdprlrdn>well, ok. its just that i hear a lot about peoploe freaking out about 80 degress being very hot
[02:16]<jdprlrdn>in forums and such
[02:16]<jdprlrdn>so i was thinking 125 must be a kiss of death
[02:16]<jdprlrdn>im not sure about the 7900gt
[02:16]<jdprlrdn>i think it can run pretty hot though
[02:17]<svjzc>a general rule to go by; if it's too hot to touch then it's not healthy
[02:17]<svjzc>being hot just shortens the life span
[02:18]<svjzc>i wouldn't think being over 100 for a few minutes is gonna damage it too much
[02:26]<jdprlrdn>ok, unrelated buy, if i break my pc by electrostatic charge, should i bother trying to RMA it to HP computers? anyone know what their testing consists of?
[02:26]<svjzc>does it cost you anything?
[02:26]<jdprlrdn>a minimal charge
[02:26]<jdprlrdn>to ship it
[02:27]<jdprlrdn>the pc cost me 700 dollars though
[02:32]<svjzc>not so much
[02:32]<svjzc>might be worth it
[02:43]<cxnpwyff>cyberhome dvd players suck :(
[04:01]<menre>does anyone know when the next generation of opterons is due out?
[04:12]<nnw2ynmjj>Anyone know where I can buy a 1.6ghz Intel Pentium M processor cheap? I want to put it into a T42 IBM Thinkpad. I don't want the power hogging 1.8ghz that is in there now.
[04:13]<pzyvj2rgmyvj>you could always go dumpster diving
[04:13]<pzyvj2rgmyvj>you never know!
[04:16]<nnw2ynmjj>I need a teacher for such a pursuit. Perhaps you could give me a demonstration 12:4)
[04:16]<nnw2ynmjj>Seattle folks over charge for their used anything. Seattle is a really expensive city to live in.
[04:30]<hjfgfgssggss>Oh, he left?
[04:31]<hjfgfgssggss>considering a 1.8 P-M can throttle down just as far as a 1.6...
[05:03]<2zyac>seriously... they have "speedstep"
[06:28]<fmjv>damn, IDE sucks
[06:29]<fmjv>MrNaz: Yes, someone knows
[06:34]<fmjv>damn, it was ages since I forgot how stupid PATA is
[06:39]<d9vn_g>hi
[06:39]<zzyzn>anyone in here know of a good water colling system that doesn't have a 2 foot tall res lol
[06:40]<d9vn_g>my processor is making me mad.. its an AMD 64 3500+.. when im playing WoW or CS.... certain maps i think causee the cpu to go near 100%
[06:40]<d9vn_g>slows down everything :'*
[06:40]<d9vn_g>:'(
[06:43]<fmjv>probably texture memory is too small
[06:54]<d9vn_g>hmm?
[06:54]<d9vn_g>im about to throw my cpu in the garbage :"(
[06:55]<d9vn_g>it just randomly goes to 100% sometimes
[06:58]<fmjv>it's not the cpu issue
[06:58]<fmjv>it's probably graphics memory being insufficient for larger maps, hence it starts to use system memory for rendering
[06:58]<fmjv>or, alternatively, some background service of your OS
[07:08]<[wv]>what's in cat5 cables? is that copper or gold or both or what?
[07:09]<vajusc>just copper I believe
[07:11]<2zyac>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat-5 seems to agree
[07:11]<2zyac>is gold wire used in anything?
[07:11]<2zyac>the skin effect should make gold-plating much more effective
[07:11]<fmjv>cat5 is anything which agrees with 250MHz 10dB cutoff
[07:12]<fmjv>I've seen cat5-cable made of PCB, enough ? :D
[07:14]<fmjv>gold wire is used quite a lot... and goldplated wiring is very popular in high-frequency systems
[07:14]<vajusc>Indeed
[07:15]<fmjv>I think my infiniband cables are goldplated all the way through.. but they're too expensive to cut through the shielding
[07:18]<d9vn_g>qdot graphics memory isnt enough?
[07:18]<d9vn_g>:/
[07:18]<fmjv>D4ve_G: possible..
[07:18]<fmjv>D4ve_G: I'd check for services and programs running in background first
[07:19]<d9vn_g>i am
[07:19]<d9vn_g>WoW.exe
[07:19]<d9vn_g>is all the CPU
[07:19]<d9vn_g>sometmes its like svchost.exe
[07:19]<d9vn_g>or something
[08:39]<2dsyg>what is a good vista ready videocard?
[08:40]<[wv]>the time-space continuum is not even vista ready, let alone any individual pieces of computer equipment
[09:07]<2zyac>i love how microsoft seeded the world with this concept of being "vista ready"
[09:07]<2zyac>by god, we'll finally have an operating system that will require no future upgrades!
[09:08]<2dsyg>brick huh?
