[00:02]<zgmznzzv>I'm considering this mainboard, what do you think -> http://www.gamegiants.net/product_info.php?products_id=557
[00:03]<zgmznzzv>it's not in store here before the end of september, should I go for something else or wait for it?
[00:03]<zgmznzzv>I really like those specs :)
[00:22]<svjzcdn>anyone around?
[00:54]<svjzcdn>jesus
[00:54]<svjzcdn>my mate took the heatsink off his cpu
[00:54]<svjzcdn>and wiped off the heatsink because it looked like dust
[00:54]<svjzcdn>heatpaste*
[00:54]<pfd2rac->and turned it on ?
[00:54]<svjzcdn>yep
[00:54]<svjzcdn>he's running it atm
[00:54]<pfd2rac->darwin awards
[00:55]<svjzcdn>CPU is at 78C :\
[00:55]<pfd2rac->tell him to turn it off before it dies perm
[00:55]<svjzcdn>pentium 4
[00:55]<svjzcdn>i did
[00:55]<pfd2rac->it's going to at that temp
[00:55]<svjzcdn>you think that could be causing issues with graphics?
[00:55]<pfd2rac->uhh yeah
[00:55]<pfd2rac->you mean like slowness etc?
[00:56]<svjzcdn>yeah
[00:56]<pfd2rac->yeah because the cpu is cycling down to prevent burning
[00:57]<svjzcdn>ah
[00:57]<svjzcdn>cunning
[00:57]<svjzcdn>my diagnosis of overheating was correct
[00:57]<svjzcdn>although tbh i suspected the GPU until he told me he removed the cpu heatsink ;p
[01:13]<sdrw>whats a good hardware book for writing device drivers and or kernel modules.
[01:13]<sdrw>i dont want a pc repair book like A+
[01:16]<pfd2rac->google :P
[02:20]<pnvnz66>Hi I bought a 20" imac the other week for university (i'm doing software development) and today apple have brought out a slightly faster model
[02:20]<pnvnz66>my imac has a core duo 2 ghz processor and the new 20" imac has a core 2 duo 2.16 ghz processor, is there much difference in speed?
[02:26]<sdrw>in you're in software devel, wouldn't you much rather have a Linux box ?
[04:38]<ajmnjppyanz>anyone using an external raid setup? I'm looking for cheap external cases for 2-4 drives
[04:38]<ajmnjppyanz>cheap but cool mind you :)
[04:39]<gnvdrsc>hello
[04:39]<ajmnjppyanz>heyas
[05:00]<drgrg>anyone know of any good keyboards for people missing fingers? (someone I know)
[05:00]<vzyppym_hugvnz>DanaG: there are left handed and right handed dvorak layouts, as well as a full one
[05:01]<vzyppym_hugvnz>I use it myself :)
[05:15]<drgrg>I'm looking at this "dasher" thing.
[05:19]<ggpvugg>dasher is cool
[05:23]<drgrg>Though it's hard to correct a mistake it makes -- if you edit it, it duplicates the last letter.
[06:50]<aunnz>I just got all my parts for my new computer and I'm not getting any video on boot. Everything spins up ok, motherboard and case didn't come with a speaker as far as I can see.
[06:50]<aunnz>give me one sec, I'll type specs out
[06:51]<aunnz>Mobo: Asus P5B Deluxe P965 775, 2MB Gskill ram, 550W Antec PSU, 3 HDDS (2 Raid-0, 1 media), Samsung DVD-R, and a 7900GTX
[06:52]<aunnz>Any ideas?
[06:53]<drgrg>Get a speaker.....
[06:53]<drgrg>It's kinda hard to diagnose without one.
[06:56]<aunnz>the other speaker is in the case of the other computer, I can just plug that into the new mobo right?
[06:56]<aunnz>(I don't build computers on a regular basis, heh)
[06:57]<drgrg>Yeah.
[06:57]<drgrg>One thing I often find useful: remove the RAM. If it does not beep, something's screwed up before then.
[06:57]<drgrg>Same for video.
[06:58]<fmjv>one thing I often find useful.. check the beeper first :)
[07:02]<aunnz>ok here goes
[07:02]<aunnz>no beeps >_<
[07:03]<drgrg>Hmm.
[07:03]<drgrg>That's often a bad sign -- CPU or BIOS.
[07:03]<aunnz>:(
[07:04]<aunnz>I was super careful putting it together, no mishaps
[07:04]<aunnz>this isn't likely a problem because of having a PCI-E video card or anything? (I did try both outputs on it)
[07:04]<drgrg>No -- no beeps is something before video.
[07:04]<drgrg>If you remove the RAM, it should beep.
[07:04]<aunnz>ok, let me give that a shot
[07:05]<drgrg>My NF7-S would NOT beep on a normal boot -- so you had to make it beep.
[07:07]<aunnz>ram is out... hooking up the speaker again
[07:11]<aunnz>no ram, no beeps
[07:11]<aunnz>this really doesn't sound good now
[07:13]<aunnz>any thoughts?
[07:13]<aunnz>is there any possible way I don't have some bad hardware?
[07:14]<drgrg>Well, try resetting BIOS settings.
[07:14]<drgrg>Also check all jumpers.
[07:17]<aunnz>it should beep with no ram or video, right?
[07:18]<aunnz>(resetting bios atm)
[07:18]<drgrg>Right.
[07:20]<aunnz>nothing
[07:20]<aunnz>reseat processor, or not worth it?
[07:20]<azzzdepp>hey all -- anyone ever had a HD work as slave and not as master?
[07:20]<drgrg>Perhaps try reseating it.
[07:21]<azzzdepp>er -- work as slave and not as a single (set on master/slave)
[07:21]<drgrg>I don't know -- it's been eliminated to CPU or Motherboard (to Auzer)
[07:21]<drgrg>Oh, some drives have a separate "master with no slave present"
[07:21]<drgrg>On WD drives, that would be "no jumper"
[07:21]<azzzdepp>gah -- i'm way too tired, i meant to say -- it works as slave (with another master drive) but not as a single or master
[07:22]<drgrg>It could also be a screwed up cable.
[07:22]<azzzdepp>all i see on the website for jumper settings is Master and Master with CLJ <--???
[07:23]<azzzdepp>i've switched out the cable
[07:23]<azzzdepp>and i've had this problem before with a different board
[07:24]<fmjv>power sumppy ?
[07:24]<fmjv>supply
[07:24]<azzzdepp>i've had this same problem in totally different boxes
[07:26]<fmjv>mains power fluctuation? overheat?
[07:28]<aunnz>no beeps still... I don't have another processor, or another mobo to use to test...
