[00:05]<vzyppym_hugvnz>STP isn't commonly used for networking, although it's a good idea for long runs
[00:16]<bjr>you can't put an RJ45 connector on them
[00:16]<bjr>cause they're too thick
[00:17]<slcjd2>well, you can stick a RJ45 connector onto the end of them... the end result just might not be that good :)
[00:17]<slcjd2>but it works!
[00:18]<ndns>um... and what if I want to run Cat5 over a floor that has power lines in it?
[00:18]<bjr>fiber
[00:18]<vzyppym_hugvnz>emes: run it at right angles for best noise immunity, but cat5 is balanced anyway so it's not likely to be a problem
[00:18]<bjr>:P
[01:00]<svjggggwv>and use cat6 ;)
[01:04]<zzdsnzvnz>802.1g usb ethernet card for linux?
[01:06]<-- rfgw_yjggsru xrs>http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/ <- 3,400,000,000+ users can't be wrong")
[01:16]<bfyssnw>ramserver: something with either ZyDAS or Ralink chipset.
[03:33]<zzdsnzvnz>zd1211 ive got
[03:33]<zzdsnzvnz>knoppix loads the bitch but i cant get a normal distro to do the same
[03:33]<zzdsnzvnz>f--k
[06:09]<dzrr|mrr>I've got one MicroATX board and three possible original case ideas. I'll list them separately. I'd like to know what the people in this channel think is the best of the three to attempt.
[06:11]<pfd2rac>go on
[06:11]<pfd2rac>drac were you the guy with the bad caps
[06:11]<dzrr|mrr>1: A gutted B&W Powermac G3 case: This would require removing the existing motherboard standoffs in some way (possibly with a hacksaw, as I lack a dremel), drilling holes for new risers, and somehow creating a plate to cover the gaps around the ports in the back (again, no dremel)
[06:11]<dzrr|mrr>flyback, No.
[06:11]<dzrr|mrr>I had the dead video cards. :P
[06:12]<dzrr|mrr>2: The Motherboard PC: I've been working on a case that is essentially a typical case with all outer coverings removed and lots of dead motherboards. It'd be ironic and intimidating, I guess.
[06:13]<pfd2rac>wait
[06:13]<pfd2rac>ddi you trash the powermac mb?
[06:13]<dzrr|mrr>The firmware is messed up. It doesn't update properly. I just got another powermac, anyway.
[06:14]<pfd2rac>save it
[06:14]<dzrr|mrr>I will, but I'll probably put it in a different case.
[06:14]<pfd2rac>you can hack it up into a linux/bsd box
[06:14]<dzrr|mrr>I'm using Linux on the working Powermac at this very moment. :P
[06:16]<dzrr|mrr>I really need to put some RAM in it and overclock it to 500Mhz. I don't think it's at that yet. I got it with a DVD and Zip drive already installed, along with a SCSI card. I love free stuff. The Zip drive is useless, but you get my point.
[06:16]<pfd2rac>heheh
[06:17]<dzrr|mrr>Anyway, here's the third:
[06:18]<dzrr|mrr>3: Another retro-rebirth: I have an IBM Personal Computer/2 that doesn't seem to work. It appears to have standard VGA and PS/2 ports on the back, but given its age, the PS/2 ports are probably proprietary keyboard and joystick ports, and the VGA may not be compatible with any modern monitors. I thought it'd be fun to stick FreeDOS on, but I can't really afford to run the monster PSU anyway with my current electric bill.
[06:19]<pfd2rac>ps/2 sux
[06:19]<pfd2rac>propritary garbage
[06:19]<pfd2rac>microchannel right?
[06:19]<dzrr|mrr>Of course.
[06:19]<dzrr|mrr>Um.. It's the small plug?
[06:19]<pfd2rac>no I am talking about inside
[06:19]<pfd2rac>what cpu is that even
[06:19]<dzrr|mrr>The IBM Personal Computer/2 is from the early 80s. :P
[06:20]<pfd2rac>don't even bother
[06:20]<pfd2rac>i'll gie you a pentium motherboard, cpu and 64 meg of ram free even
[06:20]<dzrr|mrr>I've got oodles of those. :P
[06:20]<dzrr|mrr>I keep breaking them. >>
[06:21]<dzrr|mrr>They're so worthless these days that I do crazy experiments with them. Tried to cram several different AT boards into a Tandy 1000 TX case (they lined up pretty nicely with some modifications) while fitting the disassembled AT PSU into the case of the orginal Tandy PSU.
[06:22]<dzrr|mrr>I'll take the SD-RAM, though. I've got a pile already, but it's always good to have.
[06:22]<dzrr|mrr>Hell, I'll take it all. I could always use more test parts. :P
[06:23]<pfd2rac>the tandy
[06:23]<pfd2rac>is more fun to work with
[06:23]<pfd2rac>than ps/2
[06:23]<pfd2rac>don't have any spare sdram sorry
[06:23]<dzrr|mrr>Not PS/2, Personal Computer/2
[06:23]<pfd2rac>oh
[06:23]<pfd2rac>what cpu
[06:24]<dzrr|mrr>I don't know. Not much on the /2 via google. Wikipedia only has info on the original IBM Personal Computer.
[06:24]<pfd2rac>well look at the case
[06:24]<pfd2rac>should have a model or something
[06:25]<dzrr|mrr>Er... You don't know much about old computers, do you? :P
[06:25]<pfd2rac>yes I do
[06:25]<pfd2rac>I been doing this 13+ yrs
[06:25]<dzrr|mrr>I see.
[06:26]<dzrr|mrr>So you'd be able to tell me what Tandy Deskmate is, then.
[06:26]<pfd2rac>it was a tandy os shell gui thing
[06:26]<pfd2rac>never used it
[06:29]<dzrr|mrr>I used it. Lots of fun. Kind of awkward but still impressive.
[06:30]<dzrr|mrr>Anyway, the only number I could get for the CPU is '8085'
[06:30]<dzrr|mrr>err
[06:30]<dzrr|mrr>8055
[06:30]<dzrr|mrr>Sorry
[06:30]<dzrr|mrr>It could, apparently, also run Windows 3.1
[06:30]<pfd2rac>no
[06:30]<pfd2rac>couldn't have been 8085
[06:31]<pfd2rac>it couldn't even run dos then
[06:31]<dzrr|mrr>I said 8055
[06:31]<pfd2rac>same problem
[06:31]<dzrr|mrr>Hmm.
[06:31]<pfd2rac>8055 isn't even a cpu
[06:31]<pfd2rac>that's a i/o support chip if I remeber correctely
[06:31]<dzrr|mrr>Well, that's the IBM model, then.
[06:31]<pfd2rac>8086 or 8088 or 80286
[06:31]<pfd2rac>or 186 or 188
[06:31]<dzrr|mrr>Right. I know of those. It confused me, too.
[06:31]<dzrr|mrr>This is just the IBM model number, I guess.
[06:31]<pfd2rac>need a 286 at least for windows 3.1 or 3.11 in standard mode
[06:31]<dzrr|mrr>Hmm.
[06:32]<dzrr|mrr>I think this Russian site is bullshitting, then.
[06:32]<dzrr|mrr>I doubt this hunk of junk ran 3.1 anyway.
[06:32]<pfd2rac>386+ only for 3.1 in enchance mode and 3.1/3.11 workgroups which is enhanced mode only
[06:32]<dzrr|mrr>I can't find ANY decent info on it.
[06:32]<pfd2rac>what is the model again
[06:33]<dzrr|mrr>http://www.finest-kind.net/theseries/videoclips.php
[06:33]<pfd2rac>no time right now
