[22:33]<wg22gg>when trying to validate html i get this warning: "The MIME Media Type (text/html) for this document is used to serve both SGML and XML based documents, and it is not possible to disambiguate it based on the DOCTYPE Declaration in your document. Parsing will continue in SGML mode."
[22:33]<wg22gg>is that normal?
[22:37]<20rv>What doctype are you using?
[22:38]<wg22gg>b0at: here's the URL: http://www.benjaminhawkeslewis.com:3000/shipping_addresses/new
[22:38]<wg22gg>it's strict html 4.01
[22:39]<wg22gg>(it doesn't validate for reasons i haven't worked out yet
[22:39]<wg22gg>oh hold on
[22:39]<20rv>`doctype html4strict
[22:39]<rtfs>doctype html4strict: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">
[22:39]<20rv>You're missing that piece ^
[22:48]<wg22gg>b0at: ah, so i was
[22:48]<wg22gg>b0at: so is that message inevitable with a custom doctype?
[22:50]<20rv>Yes, since (as the its message notes) the validator only knows a few doctypes and what they really mean
[22:52]<wg22gg>I see ... is there any way to specify the SGML decl for a custom doctype?
[22:52]<wg22gg>hmm ... divs can go under fieldsets in html can't they?
[22:53]<wg22gg>what's wrong with my div http://www.benjaminhawkeslewis.com:3000/shipping_addresses/new
[22:54]<wg22gg>is the inclusion of a legend not optional with HTML 4.01 Strict fieldsets?
[22:57]<20rv>Legend is required for a fieldset, yes
[22:57]<20rv>It makes sense to give it a name. You can style it in various ways, too.
[22:58]<20rv>The pair are very useful on an extensive form for alternative UAs, eg where the legend would be spoken aloud.
[23:00]<wg22gg>b0at: it's different to xhtml that's all ... it makes it impossible to use it as a general container within forms
[23:28]<wrrdnst>um hi, sorry to barge in on the fun, but I hope someone can offer some help. I am wondering what to throw into my html so that the browser will correctly interpret foreign language characters such as those with accents and umlauts - thanks a lot in advance
[23:30]<rrafune>I am having the same problem.
[23:31]<rgzmrg>Stupid question of the week: Why is Firefox [1.5.0.5] not stretching a div to fit a div that has the CSS float attribute?
[23:31]<mygy2jv>Aerdan: float isn't called an "attribute", it's called a "property".
[23:45]<wrrdnst>ah - sorry to have bother y'all - looks like it is my smarty template and nothing to do with my html
[23:46]<rgzmrg>s/smarty/dummy/;# cos it's certainly not very intelligent.
[23:47]<rgzmrg>. o O (but then, I hate PHP with a passion more normally reserved for my hatred of child molesters.)
[23:48]<wrrdnst>those are some tough feelings ;)
[23:52]<wrrdnst>thanks anyway all l8r
