[00:00]<mrrygmrg>ips 100 to 102 i told dhcp not to touch
[00:00]<mrrygmrg>as they are static
[00:00]<mrrygmrg>and set manually
[00:00]<mrrygmrg>so my range the router gives out
[00:00]<mrrygmrg>is 103 to 150
[00:01]<mrrygmrg>on the ibook when i connect i just tell it to connect to TRON-142eM.local
[00:01]<mrrygmrg>for the server name
[00:01]<mrrygmrg>and when all is playing nice that works fine
[00:04]<zyzxzzmp_>MacinMan: it depends how the name is being propagated
[00:04]<zyzxzzmp_>you are not talking about DNS
[00:04]<mrrygmrg>quel_grand_nez like now Name server: hostname tron-142em.local = 192.168.0.100 when things goes ary that fails
[00:04]<zyzxzzmp_>probably bonjour or netbios name resolutio
[00:05]<mrrygmrg>oh ok
[00:05]<zyzxzzmp_>dunno how bonjour works, but netbios name resolution sucks ass
[00:05]<fugf_eergm_gge>RichardP_: I started thinking /etc/hosts ('cos I spend most of my time up to my elbows in linux boxes)
[00:06]<fugf_eergm_gge>RichardP_: but then I realised that we are probably thinking about NetInfo
[00:06]<fugf_eergm_gge>so I'm currently tripping through my netinfo manager looking for clues
[00:07]<mrrygmrg>quel_grand_nez one of the biggest things that breaks this is if the router is resedt somehow
[00:08]<mrrygmrg>then again since i set it manually the router may not even be handling this ip
[00:09]<fugf_eergm_gge>MacinMan: The router *must* know that the address is taken, else it wouldn't route :o)
[00:09]<mrrygmrg>right, it just doesn't show up in the router's dhcp table
[00:10]<mrrygmrg>as it's not a dhcp assigned ip
[00:10]<fugf_eergm_gge>The advertisement that the server is available and has the *name* is independent of the router though
[00:10]<fugf_eergm_gge>If you have just the one machine as server
[00:10]<fugf_eergm_gge>and few clients
[00:10]<fugf_eergm_gge>you could manually assign the name mapping (with whatever you wanted as the name)
[00:10]<fugf_eergm_gge>into the /etc/hosts file
[00:11]<fugf_eergm_gge>Your /etc/hosts file will have entries like:
[00:11]<fugf_eergm_gge>127.0.0.1 localhost
[00:11]<mrrygmrg>well the server also is aviable to the internet too and the net always works it's the private networking that has breakage
[00:11]<zyzxzzmp_>MacinMan: setup internal dns
[00:11]<fugf_eergm_gge>and you can add
[00:12]<fugf_eergm_gge>192.168.0.100 myservername
[00:12]<fugf_eergm_gge>and be able to hit myservername from *that* client
[00:12]<fugf_eergm_gge>i.e. the one that you have *told* about the mapping
[00:13]<mrrygmrg>will myservername be aviable to any computer on the local network?
[00:13]<fugf_eergm_gge>What do you mean by 'the server also is aviable to the internet too'?
[00:13]<mrrygmrg>the box run an ircd will also be setting up apache etc
[00:13]<mrrygmrg>so it is aviable for web users as well as private local users
[00:13]<fugf_eergm_gge>MacinMan: You need to add the entry to the hosts file of the machine(s) that you are connecting *from*
[00:13]<dnsuvv>nn
[00:14]<mrrygmrg>ok
[00:14]<mrrygmrg>so on the ibook i'd enter the emac's ip and name in hosts
[00:14]<fugf_eergm_gge>MacinMan: yes
[00:15]<mrrygmrg>do i touch the host file on the emac?
[00:15]<fugf_eergm_gge>MacinMan: so you've set up the router to pass through irc requests to 198.168.0.100
[00:15]<fugf_eergm_gge>MacinMan: No need to modify the emac file.
[00:15]<mrrygmrg>yes
[00:15]<fugf_eergm_gge>The system that you are on needs to be able to translate the name to an IP address
[00:15]<fugf_eergm_gge>It will (eventually) look in the /etc/hosts file
[00:16]<mrrygmrg>ok
[00:16]<fugf_eergm_gge>Of course, I may be wrong as there are ways to make it ignore that file
[00:16]<fugf_eergm_gge>and I don't know what the default settings are on Mac
[00:16]<fugf_eergm_gge>Re your ircd and available from the internet
[00:16]<fugf_eergm_gge>The mapping is not against your local name in that instance
[00:17]<fugf_eergm_gge>It is to your (presumably static) internt IP address
[00:17]<fugf_eergm_gge>The router will see the traffic coming through
[00:17]<mrrygmrg>right
[00:17]<fugf_eergm_gge>and knows to route the irc traffic to the private address inside your network
[00:17]<mrrygmrg>correct
[00:17]<fugf_eergm_gge>The external machine thinks it is connecting to a machine at the router's address
[00:17]<fugf_eergm_gge>which it is
[00:17]<mrrygmrg>i was thinking of using the linux pc for mail and web
[00:18]<mrrygmrg>so those would route to a diff private ip
[00:18]<mrrygmrg>i tried freebsd and was disappointed
[00:18]<mrrygmrg>as my usb mouse didn't work
[00:19]<fugf_eergm_gge>I got to run now
[00:19]<fugf_eergm_gge>Hope you get it sorted
[00:19]<mrrygmrg>thanks
[00:19]<mrrygmrg>i will :)
[00:21]<pgjzmwq1>Hey apple people. i saw this and wanted to share it :)
[00:21]<pgjzmwq1>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDSGmx8c2AM&eurl=
[00:24]<sxzzcxzv>you son of a bitch
[00:24]<sxzzcxzv>i actually watched that
[00:24]<zyzxzzmp_>fnord123: fantastic :)
[00:24]<sxzzcxzv>wiating for the punchline
[00:24]<sxzzcxzv>lol
[00:25]<sxzzcxzv>and then... Ooo another example of japanese televsion
[00:25]<sxzzcxzv>then it all made sense
[00:25]<sxzzcxzv>lol
[00:25]<pzjavjg>Any suggestions for a decent light weight IRC client? I am currently using Snak, which I am somewhat pleased with.
[00:25]<zyzxzzmp_>irssi
[00:25]<pgjzmwq1>colloquy does the trick for me
[00:25]<mrrygmrg>richard got it fixed /etc/hosts works
[00:26]<pzjavjg>colloquy uses way too much memory for me and is just slow at times.
[00:26]<pzjavjg>irssi I've never really gotten used to.
[00:27]<pgjzmwq1>i got myself 2 jiggy bytes of ram so i dont notice the ram hit. sorry for a.) flaunting. b.) not being able to empathise :D
[00:27]<pzjavjg>Heh...
[00:27]<pzjavjg>I thought 1G would be sort of enough, but.... It isn't.
[00:28]<sxzzcxzv>i keep going between coloquy and xchat aqua
[00:28]<pzjavjg>I'll try xchat aqua.
[00:28]<mrrygmrg>weird
[00:28]<sxzzcxzv>??
[00:28]<mrrygmrg>my desktop picture isn't being saved
[00:28]<mrrygmrg>it always reverts on restart
[00:28]<zyzxzzmp_>MacinMan: yeah, internal dns (to a fashion)
[00:29]<sxzzcxzv>uhh dont have permissioni to your plist file?
[00:29]<mrrygmrg>not sure
[00:29]<mrrygmrg>i just repaired permissions
[00:29]<pzjavjg>should it not show in any logs?
