[00:00]<rgmygyus>There's always Media Central
[00:00]<rgmygyus>That actually looked neat
[00:01]<yz2mrvym>damn it, cant decide between the two :s
[00:01]<rgmygyus>irbdavid: What do you awnt in a computer?
[00:01]<smgm|>irbdavid: Which Macbook and which Mac mini?
[00:01]<smgm|>irbdavid: Either way you go, you'll be very happy
[00:01]<reremgm_>synd|: thats right, sadly
[00:02]<yz2mrvym>okay heres what i got: macbook 1.83ghz with 1gb ram, 80gb hdd, applecare £810. mac mini same specs (1.66ghz), no applecare, wireless keybd £575
[00:02]<smgm|>irbdavid: I sold my Macbook because I have a mobile solution in my iBook G4 and I wanted to get a Mac mini so that I could drop a Merom in it (thus making it a PowerMac G5 dual 2.5GHz killer in a tiny box)
[00:03]<yz2mrvym>synd|: no problem with mooing/heat
[00:03]<yz2mrvym>?
[00:03]<az2>can the MBPs run 64bit?
[00:03]<rgmygyus>crb, no
[00:03]<smgm|>crb: No
[00:03]<rgmygyus>crb, none of the INtels can yet.
[00:03]<rgmygyus>crb: Merom will have EM64T though.
[00:03]<yz2mrvym>i figure that it's a made up problem to a point. still got to be cooler/quieter than my old thinkpad...
[00:03]<agp>synd|: cept for the disk
[00:03]<smgm|>irbdavid: Heat didn't cause any performance problems
[00:03]<az2>is Merom a desktop or laptop chip?
[00:04]<smgm|>crb: It's a mobile chip
[00:04]<smgm|>But is powerful enough for desktops
[00:04]<az2>think they will be upgrading the laptop with it? or comming out with new laptops?
[00:04]<zsgnmmnzs>crb: Conroe is the desktop Core microarch chip
[00:04]<yz2mrvym>power's not really an issue for me, i do all my 'real' work on a quad opteron... :D
[00:04]<smgm|>crb: Yes
[00:04]<zsgnmmnzs>crb: rumor is new laptops with new enclosures at WWDC
[00:05]<rgmygyus>Not quite as nice as the G5's 64bit, but, whatever, that doesn't really matter unless you do technical computing.
[00:05]<smgm|>crb: They will have Merom-laden MacBook Pros
[00:05]<az2>is the virtualization support better in the Merom?
[00:05]<smgm|>crb: It has better VT performance
[00:06]<smgm|>cnf: But I'm talking about raw computing power :P
[00:06]<agp>synd|: i rarely lack chat :)
[00:07]<smgm|>I am going to strap a FW'd 7200RPM HDD on the Mac mini (and have it boot OS X from that)
[00:07]<rgmygyus>mmm FireWire
[00:08]<smgm|>gsnedders: I've not really heard any rumors about a new notebook at WWDC
[00:08]<smgm|>gsnedders: All I have heard is the Mac Pro with a new enclosure at WWDI
[00:08]<smgm|>WWDC
[00:08]<zsgnmmnzs>synd|: http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/07/20060704122932.shtml
[00:09]<smgm|>Well then that's the first :)
[00:09]<zsgnmmnzs>synd|: some say WWDC, some say after WWDC
[00:09]<zsgnmmnzs>synd|: but a new enclosure when it gets Mermon
[00:09]<smgm|>I highly doubt a Merom-laden MacBook Pro at WWDC
[00:10]<zsgnmmnzs>synd|: Merom is due to ship in August, so it's perfectly possible
[00:10]<yz2mrvym>anyone know if you can get front row to appear by default on an external monitor on the macbook?
[00:10]<smgm|>gsnedders: Woodcrest shipped last month.. and there's still no Mac Pro :P
[00:11]<az2>what is woodcrest
[00:11]<zsgnmmnzs>synd|: no keynote yet :P
[00:11]<zsgnmmnzs>crb: Xeon 5100
[00:11]<zsgnmmnzs>crb: dual-core core microarch based Intel server/workstation chip
[00:11]<smgm|>gsnedders: I think they should definitely do it if possible, since the only substantial gap between the Macbook and Macbook Pro is price
[00:11]<gyaj_>any idea what's the best way to implement "wireless storage"? (without another computer)
[00:11]<zsgnmmnzs>synd|: and the screen size.
[00:12]<gyaj_>i've read that some AP exist to which you can connect an USB drive...
[00:12]<smgm|>gsnedders: So?
[00:12]<zsgnmmnzs>synd|: IMO screen size is a substantial gap
[00:12]<smgm|>gsnedders: The thing about Apple is that when their notebooks get smaller, their prices also get smaller. And that's very, very contradicting to the rest of the PC notebook market
[00:13]<smgm|>With everyone else, smaller = $$
[00:13]<zsgnmmnzs>synd|: I know.
[00:13]<zsgnmmnzs>but IMO it is still a different substantial gap :P
[00:13]<smgm|>So "paying" for a bigger screen in a portable is (and losing portability) is a crock, IMO :P
[00:14]<smgm|>gsnedders: Yes, it's substantial. But substantial in the same way the price is
[00:14]<zsgnmmnzs>synd|: yeah.
[00:15]<smgm|>And many seem to agree, since Macbooks vastly outsell Macbook Pros
[00:15]<smgm|>Vs PowerBooks vastly outselling iBooks
[00:15]<pnffrjjr>powerbooks outsold iBooks?
[00:16]<reremgm_>synd|: the other way around?
[00:16]<reremgm_>more iBooks than pbooks
[00:16]<smgm|>fellgoog: PowerBooks outsold everything
[00:16]<reremgm_>hmm? They did?
[00:16]<smgm|>crazynd_: Yes
[00:16]<pnffrjjr>I'm flabbergasted
[00:16]<smgm|>PowerBooks were the #1 sold Mac
[00:16]<reremgm_>well, know why... <taps on the pb>
[00:16]<pnffrjjr>back then the price gap was even more substantial than now between mb and mbp
[00:17]<smgm|>Yet, they were very underpowered
[00:17]<cxjusucn>Heh. That less size = more price comment by synd reminded me of when I was looking for a laptop
[00:17]<smgm|>So that's why the MacBook Pro was the very first Intel laden Mac
[00:17]<yz2mrvym>'m not sure if a macbook would make best use of my monitor (1680x1050)
[00:17]<reremgm_>irbdavid: My pb does it fine
[00:17]<smgm|>irbdavid: Sure it would
[00:17]<cxjusucn>I saw a HP 12" one on display in a store. it cost 1400 euros, and had less power than its bigger cousins :P
[00:18]<yz2mrvym>well in that it would be the secondary monitor, despite it being bigger n better
[00:18]<cxjusucn>or it might've been an IBM. Something like that anyway
[00:18]<smgm|>irbdavid: The Macbook can definitely handle that
[00:18]<pnffrjjr>chousuke: I think cpu power is grossly overrated
[00:18]<cxjusucn>Ultimately I ended up with my powerbook.
[00:18]<smgm|>Hell, it can handle 1080p w/o a hitch
[00:19]<cxjusucn>fellgoog: I agree.
[00:19]<yz2mrvym>apparently you can switch front row to a secondary monitor: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2442934
[00:19]<yz2mrvym>w00t
[00:19]<reremgm_>well, ok, pb can't to 1080p. But workin on the biig screen is fine, as well as watching non-HD-videos
[00:19]<smgm|>fellgoog: For the 90% of consumers that do mundane and non-processor intensive tasks, CPU power is overrated
[00:20]<yz2mrvym>sod it, i'll get the macbook
[00:20]<cxjusucn>memory is never overrated though.
[00:20]<smgm|>irbdavid: Good choice
[00:20]<yz2mrvym>if i dont like it, can always return for a mini :D
[00:20]<agp>i dislike the glossy screens
[00:20]<reremgm_>irbdavid: Wanna pay us with mbps for the help?
[00:20]<reremgm_>:D
