[00:30]<nwp>looking at the screenshot, you see the [#z,#f,#web,#p,i] in the modeline, those are the channels: zsh, freedesktop, web, perl, and the server channel
[00:30]<nwp>#z is blue, b/c someone either joined or parted
[00:31]<nwp>i is red, b/x i was messaged by the server to identify myself

[00:32]<nwp>so if some on in #perl had mentioned my nick, #p would have turned yellow
[00:33]<nwp>you start erc with m-x erc-select (i guess, i should mention that in the .emacs file)
