[00:01]<svzz-vzncyj>well fokls
[00:01]<svzz-vzncyj>Im being buggered by this install
[00:02]<zzzmmugn>hello star-trekio, I am Pentium of Borg. Division is futile. You will be approximated!
[00:02]<zzzmmugn>Sorry -- could not resist :P
[00:02]<mrs>I'm trying to do a CVS pkgsrc update and I ran these: ---- CVSROOT="anoncvs@anoncvs.NetBSD.org:/cvsroot"
[00:03]<mrs>CVS_RSH="ssh" export CVSROOT CVS_RSH then cvs -q checkout -P pkgsrc at the CLI, but it's not doing anything, is CVS possibly down or congested?
[00:03]<syzuszw>anoncvs tends to be a bit pokey at times yeah.
[00:04]<mrs>ok I just wanted to make sure I also ran the correct cmds....
[00:04]<mrs>yeah seems quite pokey :/
[00:05]<mrs>by the way is pkgsrc-2006Q2.tar.gz also stable, I mean a newer stable version from pkgsrc-2006Q1?
[00:06]<mrs>I'm a bit new with NetBSD so I'm trying to figure the stable ones always go by like year?
[00:06]<dzezycssjg>Yes, 2006Q1 is a "stable" release
[00:06]<mrs>that I know, I mean what's with 2006Q2?
[00:07]<dzezycssjg>Releases of pkgsrc is branched four times per year, and these are kept up to date until the next branch is made
[00:07]<dzezycssjg>Well, branch of pkgsrc as of the end of second quarder of 2006? :)
[00:07]<mrs>yeah I was getting the idea that this is the 2nd quarter for the stable realease, HENCE 2006Q2
[00:07]<dzezycssjg>Right :)
[00:07]<mrs>ok
[00:07]<dyfjsg>Q2 has been branched?
[00:08]<dzezycssjg>milosn: Yes :)
[00:08]<mrs>BUT I just downloaded Q2 on July 5th and now I looked back at it, and it's dated July 15
[00:08]<dyfjsg>ok
[00:08]<mrs>so what happened it was released again?
[00:08]<dzezycssjg>das: Before these branches, the entire pkgsrc was a all a big -current :) Was a pain in the ?ss to upgrade anything
[00:08]<mrs>21,220 KB 07/15/06 07:12:00
[00:09]<dzezycssjg>das: Branched and released are two different things :)
[00:09]<dzezycssjg>The branch is made, after which bugfixes are made, if required, and after that, a release is made
[00:09]<mrs>well all I did was download the 2006Q2 tar ----> drwxr-xr-x 52 root wheel 1536 Jul 5 12:50 pkgsrc
[00:09]<dzezycssjg>The idea is that all packages should compile without problems in a quarterly release
[00:09]<mrs>hmm I guess I got a branch then before the actual release
[00:10]<dzezycssjg>das: Right :)
[00:10]<dzezycssjg>And my guess is that there are very few changes since then too, so your package is probably quite up to date too :)
[00:11]<mrs>I get what you are saying, BUT I'd figure once the name Q is attached to it, as in this case the 2006Q2 then it's a 'Stable Release', otherwise, if it's this branch, they should be putting a B on it so as not to confuse, like 2006BQ2 because I grabbed it when it came out on the 5th this month thinking it's stable
[00:11]<mrs>ok....
[00:11]<tnllyax>mrEriksson: the idea is good, but mirrors not providing the release not any more are a bit of a problem, at least that's been one for me
[00:12]<tnllyax>(and the reason why using head now)
[00:12]<dzezycssjg>Well, it is a stable release :) My guess is that it is not released at the same time as it is branched to avoid the most obvious problems that might be there
[00:12]<dzezycssjg>Teppich: I do agree
[00:13]<dzezycssjg>on the other hand, there is always the cvsroot in you _really_ need something
[00:13]<dzezycssjg>But still, it can be quite anoying when stuff isn't available anymore :(
[00:15]<tnllyax>yepp
[00:15]<mrs>ok I just downloaded the tar since cvs isn't going at the moment, now would I need to remove the origianl pkgsrc, rm -rf, before untaring the new one into /usr, or do you just untar the new one, which will over right the old?
[00:16]<zzzmmugn>rm -rf
[00:16]<mrs>ok thx
[00:17]<svzz-vzncyj>hmm
[00:17]<svzz-vzncyj>Im downlaoding the i386 iso
[00:17]<svzz-vzncyj>in hopes it will work ncier for my amd64
[00:17]<svzz-vzncyj>which install freezes on a b c menu
[00:17]<svzz-vzncyj>if it makes it that far
[00:20]<tnllyax>das: upgrade via cvs
[00:20]<mrs>Teppich: I have been trying to for the last 15 mins, it won't go, cvs just sits there, no worries I just downloaded the tar
[00:22]<zzzmmugn>well, try another mirror
[00:22]<zzzmmugn>but don't upgrade actually
[00:22]<zzzmmugn>there are some minor issues...
[00:22]<zzzmmugn>wait a few days
[00:23]<mrs>oh 2006Q2 needs some fixing?
[00:24]<mrs>I have at the moment ---> pkgsrc-2006Q2.tar.gz 21,220 KB 07/15/06 07:12:00
[00:34]<mrs>thanks guys
[01:04]<mjmufj6>hi
[01:06]<mjmufj6>on i386, there's a redundancy between the MBR&extended partition table, and the disklabel, right?
[01:07]<rraffsax>there is usually a little, but usually nothing significant
[01:08]<rraffsax>or what kind of redundancy are we talking about?
[01:09]<rraffsax>"we only really need one way to slice things up", or "let's be sure not to only have one partition table?"
[01:11]<dyfjsg>modulo7: redudancy?
[01:11]<mjmufj6>in the netbsd install program (booted from CD), i get to edit a "disklabel", which gets saved in the zeroth(?) sector of my type 0xA9 MBR partition
[01:11]<mjmufj6>that disklabel slices up the type 0xA9 MBR partition, but also has a copy of the locations of all other MBR partitions?
[01:12]<mjmufj6>(always: MBR = MBR + extended partitions)
[01:12]<dyfjsg>mbr is basicaly not required
[01:12]<dyfjsg>but its there
[01:12]<dyfjsg>:)
[01:13]<rraffsax>i'm not quite sure where the disklabel gets stashed, but I'm rather sure it's not the first sector of the 0xA9 partition
[01:13]<dyfjsg>on the begining of 1st netbsd MBR partition
[01:14]<dyfjsg>not sure if its exactly on the begining or some magic number of sectors from the begining
[01:14]<dyfjsg>but it should be there
[01:16]<rraffsax>well the first sectors have bootxx_... in them, so I don't think the label could be there
[01:17]<mjmufj6>(jallksch: i meant the bad kind of "redundancy")
[01:18]<mjmufj6>so, if i create a new MBR partition (in MBR-unallocated space) with WinXP or linux's cfdisk, it's invisible under NetBSD until i update the disklabel?
[01:19]<rraffsax>basically, there's mbrlabel to help with that
[01:19]<dyfjsg>modulo7: yes
[01:20]<dyfjsg>its invisible ... whateve u do with your disk after install, u will need to run mbrlabel to add new stuff into disklabel
[01:21]<rraffsax>where are disk wedges when you need them?
[01:22]<rsjlvfrl>Disk wedges?
[01:22]<rraffsax>http://mail-index.netbsd.org/tech-kern/2004/09/22/0009.html
[01:28]<mjmufj6>thanks a lot for the magic word "mbrlabel". now things make sense
[01:41]<mjmufj6>i'm to make the disk bootable from E1 (fdisk display; that's /dev/hda6 in linux), where sysinst has put the netbsd installation
[01:41]<mjmufj6>trying to, even
[01:43]<mjmufj6>fdisk -c mbr_ext -B wd0 doesn't work. the "default boot option"s both look wrong
[01:43]<mjmufj6>0: The first active partition
[01:43]<mjmufj6>1: Harddisk 0
[01:43]<mjmufj6>(and both dont work; tried them)
[01:44]<mjmufj6>fdisk -c mbr_ext -B -E1 wd0 works neither
[01:46]<mjmufj6>fdisk -c mbr_ext -E1 wd0 no good
[01:46]<mjmufj6>is there a way?
[01:49]<rraffsax>there probably is, what's the layout of the disk?
[01:50]<mjmufj6>should i paste "fdisk wd0" output? where?
[01:50]<rraffsax>pastebin.com would work
[02:00]<mjmufj6>http://pastebin.com/751620
[02:04]<bfraccryrxv>hello
[02:05]<ddnsr>hi
[02:05]<bfraccryrxv>anybody run NetBSD on a laptop?
