[08:59]<gyfnsxwww> Can't fetch domain SID for name: HITECH-PDC
[08:59]<gyfnsxwww>can any body help me why this happens??
[09:10]<ggwrddyg>how i can remotely acess remote pc
[09:10]<ggwrddyg>i am able to local pc with smbmount
[10:56]<lzrn_>hello
[12:08]<ca_o>hello. someone know, why smbclient only list me IPC$ and ADMIN$ shares, but in windows I can see the share folders that I put in smb.conf? I'm using virtual samba servers. thanks
[12:23]<azdjgv>Hey guys. I'm running SUSE and trying to get Samba to work... for some reason it's not working. Is there a troubleshooting FAQ that I can run down?
[12:25]<2nznnz>Hi, samba 3.0.22 on Ubuntu Dapper, we have a problem with word startup templates. The first user start word. This opens the template in the startup directory, and a tmp file appears (~ in front of file name). When the second user opens word, they get an error about invalid template in the startup directory. This problem didn't show up on Windows 2000 server (previous installation before move to Samba). Anyone know what might be going on?
[12:41]<pyxxrg>hi
[12:42]<pyxxrg>dont you know how net usersidlist could fail on local machine?
[12:44]<vrfdsdsvm>hello
[12:45]<vrfdsdsvm>i've got some question about samba and file sizes
[12:48]<vrfdsdsvm>when i want to create big files (over 2GB), i've problems, it's very slow, but samba actually create the file, and the server has allocated space on filesystem.
[12:49]<pyxxrg>so where is your problem?
[12:49]<2nznnz>Finally found a reference to this problem from 1999 (!) - but no answer :-( http://groups.google.co.nz/group/linux.samba/browse_thread/thread/6fc4cc8e111819a3/2c729ea88e011573?lnk=st&q=global+word+template+samba+startup&rnum=4#2c729ea88e011573
[12:50]<vrfdsdsvm>Pihhan: the client complains about too big file
[12:51]<vrfdsdsvm>exemple : dd: truncating at 2500000000 bytes in output file '<file>': Too large file
[12:52]<pyxxrg>ValiSystM: so you create your file under linux?
[12:52]<vrfdsdsvm>yep and some applications does work at all
[12:52]<pyxxrg>and over samba you cannot send that big file?
[12:52]<vrfdsdsvm>that's it
[12:52]<pyxxrg>dd command you run where?
[12:52]<pyxxrg>on server?
[12:52]<vrfdsdsvm>on the client
[12:53]<pyxxrg>what was your mount command?
[12:54]<vrfdsdsvm>smbmount //g5station/ProcessRaster /mnt/G5Station/ -o username=nicolas,password=kxsvx12,rw,uid=`id -u`
[12:54]<vrfdsdsvm>(the server is a Mac OS X 10.4.6)
[12:54]<vrfdsdsvm>oups
[12:54]<vrfdsdsvm>gave a password :)
[12:55]<pyxxrg>have you tried mount -t cifs //g5station/ProcessRaster ...
[12:55]<vrfdsdsvm>i'll test it right now
[12:57]<pyxxrg>beazer: there was something about ms office errors in samba documentation, try to look for office there
[12:57]<vrfdsdsvm>does this chan is logged somewhere on the web ?
[12:58]<pyxxrg>propably
[12:58]<vrfdsdsvm>(what a fool i am, grrrr)
[12:59]<pyxxrg>you should change you password and use credentials=/path/to/pass argument instead :)
[12:59]<vrfdsdsvm>yep, but i'am just in a testing phase
[12:59]<pyxxrg>ValiSystM: sorry, i did not want to know your password
[12:59]<vrfdsdsvm>yep it's totally my fault don't worry
[13:00]<2nznnz>Pihhan: Thanks - I'll have another look
[13:01]<vrfdsdsvm>anyway this password is not used on any server connected to the web
[13:02]<pyxxrg>ValiSystM could you please test for me, if net usersidlist as root on server does work for you?
[13:03]<vrfdsdsvm>seeking for samba/mac tester ?
[13:04]<pyxxrg>no, seeking for samba tester
[13:04]<pyxxrg>it does not work for me, i think it should
[13:07]<vrfdsdsvm>hum i'am searching google, i don't know what usersidlist is and it does not seem to be documented very much
[13:10]<pyxxrg>it should print you names to sid assignment
[13:11]<pyxxrg>sid is kind of unix uid on windows
[13:11]<vrfdsdsvm>yep understood
[13:11]<vrfdsdsvm>Could not get the user/sid list
[13:12]<pyxxrg>so maybe it has to be used with some parameters
[13:12]<vrfdsdsvm>sure, you may have to activate some in config
[13:14]<vrfdsdsvm>thanks Pihhan it's slow, but seems to work correctly now
[13:15]<pyxxrg>what do you mean by slow?
[13:16]<vrfdsdsvm>there is no data transfert, but it takes many seconds to create the file
[13:16]<vrfdsdsvm>for something that take ms localy
[13:17]<vrfdsdsvm>but i'll check, it's may be mac os x issue
[13:17]<pyxxrg>i have similar problems
[13:18]<vrfdsdsvm>the most annoying is waiting for a simple rm ;)
[13:18]<pyxxrg>on my server, everything is somehow slow, every command
[13:18]<pyxxrg>well, much more annoying is when you need some script to run, and it waits about half second on every command execution
[13:19]<vrfdsdsvm>goosh :)
[13:21]<vrfdsdsvm>almost 1min to delete a file, let's check it's a samba or a Mac OS X issue ...
[13:22]<vrfdsdsvm>samba issue
[13:25]<pyxxrg>you are lucky, i have slow anything i do there
[13:25]<pyxxrg>its 2,2G, and is fast as 150MHz pentium in some things
[15:18]<wwygm_>hi. Am setting up a samba server for 100 seminarians who will use the server as file storage. I am thinking of just adding the accounts in samba and will NOT create linux user accounts. Is this recommended?
[15:29]<dsaxdyvv>re
[15:30]<dsaxdyvv>I want to copy the samba password file to another samba server so I can use the already created user accounts there. What do I need to copy? I did copy /etc/samba/smbpasswd to no avail...
[15:34]<dsg>mschmitt: what are you using as user database
[15:35]<dsg>smbpasswd or tdbsam
[15:36]<dsaxdyvv>msn: sorry... the same moment I did hit enter I realized I did not alter sambas passdb backend to smbpasswd... changed it, restart, works :)
[15:36]<dsg>k
[15:36]<dsg>no prob
[15:37]<wwygm_>is it ok to have samba users which are not linux account users?
[15:38]<dsg>what do you plan to do with such users xwind_
[15:39]<wwygm_>these samba users just need file storage access at the server.
[15:39]<dsg>xwind_: such users won't be able to access anyfiles coz the linux account not being thre, they won't have a uid and gid which means they don't access any file
[15:39]<dsg>or directory
[15:39]<dsaxdyvv>argh... no it did not work... it just worked with the one account whcih did exist before the samba installation... me bad
[15:39]<wwygm_>a common account will be created for all of them.
[15:40]<dsg>well even that account needs to map to a uid gid unless they directory you share is mode 777 and the share access is public=yes and writable=yes
[15:40]<wwygm_>hmmm ...
[15:41]<dsg>then you won't need to use any users at all
[15:41]<dsg>with directory access 777 and shared in that mode any one can write to it
[15:41]<dsg>and delete from it
[15:41]<wwygm_>yes.
[15:41]<dsg>so make sure your users are not liable to delete others work
[15:42]<dsg>well then [shared]
[15:42]<dsg>path = /path/to/dir
[15:42]<wwygm_>i just thought that it
[15:42]<dsg>set mode 777 to that dir
[15:43]<dsg>if you created the directory from some user in linux you can add forceuser = [username] and forcegroup = [groupname]
[15:43]<dsg>public = yes
[15:43]<dsg>and writable = yes
[15:43]<dsg>this way the user on linux if enters the dir will have files owned by him/her
[15:44]<dsg>and you won't face permission problems in future
