[00:00]<vzdd|wjzc>anyone ?
[00:03]<pnvzzys>I need to figure out why ads security is not workign
[00:03]<pnvzzys>er, working
[00:07]<vzdd|wjzc>how do I set the main group of a user mapped from adc ?
[00:09]<czzf>Hi, I'm trying to allow unauthd browsing and readonnly access to a share, (and also unauthed writing to a different one) but connections from the remote windows machine always pops a password dialog,
[00:10]<pnvzzys>hrm
[00:11]<pnvzzys>getent does not work
[00:11]<pnvzzys>getent passwd only shows local users
[00:11]<czzf>my config snippet is at http://pastebin.com/757632 I just used the ubuntu network shares tool to create them, and added "guest ok = yes" to try and allow them.
[00:18]<pnvzzys>hrmmmmm
[00:19]<pnvzzys>I think I may have found my problem
[00:21]<anp>karl: map to guest = Bad User
[00:28]<pnvzzys>I compiled samba without winbind and kerberos support
[00:28]<pnvzzys>:/
[00:28]<pnvzzys>ooops
[00:41]<czzf>sorry, jef, what does that mean? "map to guest = bad user"
[00:42]<anp>karl: unknown users are considered as guests.
[00:46]<czzf>and the commented out guest account = nobody bit in smb.conf needs to be uncomented, and set to a real user,
[00:47]<czzf>someone with appropriate permissions for the shares?
[01:03]<czzf>well, even a real user as the guest account doesn't help, no turning off "obey pam restrictions"
[01:03]<czzf>was I on the right track jef, or have I completely misunderstood what you were getting at?
[01:03]<pnvzzys>well that fixed it
[01:03]<pnvzzys>I'm off
[01:03]<pnvzzys>later al
[03:31]<nlydnvx>hello all!
[03:31]<nlydnvx>I've got a question about using samba 3 as a PDC
[03:32]<nlydnvx>when I logged in as a user I was told that Roaming Profiles will not work and that it is setting up a temporary account to use
[03:33]<nlydnvx>when I checked the profiles folder on the server I found that a new folder was created with the user's name (as it should be) and that its owners were user:root group:dev
[03:33]<nlydnvx>dev is the group that the user is set to, which is good... but why was it created as root?
[03:34]<nlydnvx>I changed the owner to the user and tried again
[03:34]<nlydnvx>this time everything loaded up just fine and on logout all of the appropriate files were written to the folder on the server...
[03:34]<nlydnvx>but again, as root/dev
[03:34]<nlydnvx>is this appropriate behavior for the server?
[03:35]<nlydnvx>after snooping around online I noticed the following on some newsgroup:
[03:35]<nlydnvx>root preexec = PROFILE=/home/samba/profiles/%u; if [! -e $PROFILE ]; \ then mkdir -pm700 $PROFILE; chown %u:%g $PROFILE;fi
[03:35]<nlydnvx>must I succumb to something along these lines????
[03:36]<nlydnvx>why doesn't samba know to create the files as the intended usr... it already uses its group?!?
[03:44]<-- rfgw_yjggsru xrs>http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/ <- 3,400,000,000+ users can't be wrong")
[03:45]<nlydnvx>anybody???
[04:02]<nlydnvx>arg
[04:23]<dvo->i cant get my workstation to join the domain, when i try, it says the domain is not available
[04:23]<dvo->i have the smb.conf set up, i cant manually map to the domain
[04:23]<dvo->just cant get windowsxp to join domain, anyone have a quick idea on why this is?
[04:25]<dvo->it acutall says: a domain controller for the domain HOME could not be contacted
[04:25]<dvo->Ensure that teh domain name is typed correctly
[04:29]<nlydnvx>I just had this problem... it can stem from any one of a million things.
[04:29]<nlydnvx>in my case it was that iptables was blocking netbios requests
[04:29]<nlydnvx>so check that out
[04:30]<dvo->i have iptables off
[04:30]<dvo->that was my first thought
[04:30]<nlydnvx>I'm not sure which ones have to be enabled for a PDC, so I enabled both UDP and TCP on 137, 138, and 139
[04:30]<nlydnvx>oh
[04:30]<nlydnvx>whats the name of the server?
[04:30]<nlydnvx>can you ping it by name?
[04:30]<dvo->server is OES
[04:30]<dvo->workgroup is home
[04:31]<nlydnvx>try pinging OES
[04:31]<dvo->yeah i can ping OES
[04:31]<dvo->i added that to my hosts
[04:32]<nlydnvx>I'm a samba newbie myself... I'm here to get some help... so I'm sorry I can't help you :-)
[04:32]<nlydnvx>but
[04:32]<nlydnvx>http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/wiki/index.php/Quick_HOWTO_:_Ch10_:_Windows,_Linux,_and_Samba
[04:32]<nlydnvx>try this site
[04:32]<wygwlnzv>epimeth, try READING samba 3 how to colection
[04:32]<wygwlnzv>at samba.org
[04:32]<wygwlnzv>there is a whole chapter on profiles...
[04:33]<nlydnvx>this is in RE to my ownership rights problem?
[04:33]<wygwlnzv>Dv8-, what account are you using to join to the domain?
[04:33]<wygwlnzv>did you create the machine account?
[04:33]<wygwlnzv>by hand?
[04:33]<dvo->winxpert thats the thing, i dont even get that far
[04:33]<wygwlnzv>by script?
[04:33]<dvo->and yes i did by hand
[04:33]<dvo->its my windows box that cant see a domain
[04:34]<wygwlnzv>so you can see the machine_name$ in your accounts?
[04:34]<nlydnvx>winx: I've already read a lot of samba documentation, i just found this to be a really strange problem... in fact I've been playing around with it for about 2 hours now and came up with an interesting addendum
[04:34]<nlydnvx>a different user I created (joe) works just fine
[04:34]<wygwlnzv>epimeth, TRY the samba 3 how to
[04:35]<wygwlnzv>they address that specific problem
[04:35]<nlydnvx>when I log out for the first time it populates the profiles folder as it should and gives ownership rights to joe/joe
[04:39]<dvo->if i try to add the account manaully i actually get /dev/null is invalid home dir
[04:39]<dvo->useradd -g samba-clients -d /dev/null -s /bin/false laptop$
[04:39]<dvo->useradd: Invalid home directory `/dev/null'.
[04:40]<wygwlnzv>try using one of the nifty scripts
[04:41]<wygwlnzv>try this Type "useradd -g 100 -d /dev/null -c "machine nickname" -s /bin/false machine_name$" and press Enter
[04:41]<wygwlnzv>Type "passwd -l machine_name$" and press Enter
[04:41]<wygwlnzv>Type "smbpasswd -a -m machine_name" and press Enter
[04:43]<dvo-> useradd -g 100 -d /dev/null -c laptop -s /bin/false laptop$
[04:43]<dvo->useradd: Invalid home directory `/dev/null'.
[04:43]<dvo->oes:/etc/samba #
[04:43]<nlydnvx>okay... I read all of chapter 27 and didn't see any mention of my problem...
[04:44]<wygwlnzv>did you see where it says that the directory should have specific properties?
[04:44]<nlydnvx>also, "Changing the Default profile" did not explain anything about making a default profile!!! I was actually curious....
[04:45]<nlydnvx>no... and the 'joe' profile had the same properties as the original user's but that worked fine
[04:46]<nlydnvx>also, I added another user afterwards which is a member of the same 'dev' group as the first guy... and once again the owner was root/dev
