[00:00]<rcsg>hi all
[00:00]<rcsg>how can i know all the available commands in solaris? (something like the tab key in linux)
[00:00]<ryrxvswyd>tab
[00:00]<ryrxvswyd>in the right shell
[00:00]<rrmnsm>aksn, run bash and press tab twice
[00:00]<ryrxvswyd>and also, it's a pretty bad indicator for "available commands"
[00:01]<rcsg>nightswim, my english is the bad one :P
[00:01]<rcsg>and it didnt wokr, maybe it wasnt bash
[00:01]<ryrxvswyd>probably
[00:01]<ryrxvswyd>ty[e "bash enter"
[00:01]<ryrxvswyd>:)
[00:02]<rcsg>and the last question...is...
[00:02]<rcsg>:-)
[00:02]<rrmnsm>#
[00:02]<rrmnsm>Display all 1873 possibilities? (y or n)
[00:02]<rrmnsm>#
[00:02]<rrmnsm>i'm sure i have a few more laying around in misc bin directories...
[00:03]<sfusxlulyn>you could always use find to list everything that can be executed
[00:03]<ryrxvswyd>hmm, the tab tab thing doesnt work in zsh
[00:03]<rcsg>when i installed i chose a desktop, how can i change it to the other?
[00:03]<rrmnsm>aksn, check the menus on the login page
[00:04]<rcsg>jamesd, ok, thanks! is kde available?
[00:04]<rcsg>(yes, i'm completely new to solaris :))
[00:05]<rrmnsm>aksn, if you install it either from sun freeware companion disk (old version) or blastwave.org or solaris.kde.org
[00:07]<rrmpyw>does boot-log file exist on solaris?
[00:07]<rcsg>thank you jamesd :)
[00:07]<rrmnsm>cadfix, dmesg, and a messages file exist, in solaris 10 each service gets its own log file...
[00:31]<2oes>jamesd, so is there any talk on the street regarding when we will be able to boot to a zfs pool/pools?
[00:32]<rrmnsm>b8zs, update 4... you can currently hack zfs root .. but boot is still just a seperate ufs filesystem
[00:32]<2oes>I only have 1 hard drive on my netra so I was thinking when I get solaris set up I wouldnt even benifit from zfs, but was jus curious
[00:33]<rrmnsm>b8zs, read that it explains why you will benefit from a 1 drive zfs setup... http://uadmin.blogspot.com/2006/05/why-zfs-for-home.html
[00:34]<2oes>cool, thanks
[00:47]<zxzzfyns>jamesd: :)
[00:47]<zxzzfyns>i understood the point of snapshots, and that you can now have multiple ones in each file system.
[00:49]<zxzzfyns>well you were really responding to the other guy.. n/m then.
[00:51]<rrmpyw>jamesd: dmesg is it only for the messages in the current day, isn't it?
[00:52]<rrmnsm>cadfix, no it usually keeps a fixed amount of buffered messages, in solaris it even fills the buffer with old data when it boots so you can use it to see information across boots if your logging system is quiet
[00:52]<lxusgycgg>wow seagate acquired maxtor
[00:52]<lxusgycgg>didnt see that coming
[00:53]<rrmnsm>damm sometimes you forget how big seagate is.. its easy to think that all the main drive makers are the same size...
[00:55]<rrmpyw>jamesd: are the log files for each service in /var/svc/log?
[00:55]<rrmnsm>i think so...
[00:55]<rrmnsm>yeap
[00:56]<rrmnsm>cadfix, that is just the start up log.. after a service is started it should use normal logging mechanisms like syslogd
[01:05]<-- rjrvcxrrr xrs fuy>http://www.jpg.com")
[01:09]<svgvggr>jamesd: thanks, i'll try it, I have cables :)
[01:16]<vycyrr666>*sigh*
[01:16]<vycyrr666>I'm back, with that looping-back question again...
[01:17]<vycyrr666>Got a question I can't puzzle the answer to. Under Linux, modem works fine. Under Solaris (which I just installed yesterday, again), I get "serial line looped back" when I attempt to run pppd. I ran pppd debug, and sure enough, I see lots of duplicated packets...
[01:24]<2920>omg, you wont believe what the problem was
[01:24]<sfcgsfnff>fricking hdd's were on wrong transfer mode
[01:24]<sfcgsfnff>5hrs downtime to finger that out
[01:25]<sfcgsfnff>ok, now i need to know where software from the software companion cd is installed by default?
[01:26]<sfcgsfnff>i have 2 disks im spreading the sol9 installation on and then when i add the software from the companion cd i need optimum space
[01:27]<ryrxvswyd>/usr/sfw
[01:27]<ryrxvswyd>I think
[01:27]<sfcgsfnff>i only have a 4gb and a 2gb, cant wait to get my check and get a 40gb
[01:27]<vycyrr666>hrm? ATA33 instead of ATA100?
[01:27]<sfcgsfnff>so then i should stick that on the cod1s1 as /usr/sfw for the whole 2nd disk
[01:28]<sfcgsfnff>no
[01:28]<sfcgsfnff>like pio modes and shit; i set them both to standard
[01:28]<sfcgsfnff>lba was ok tho
[01:29]<vycyrr666>..... eeeesh. Now I'm glad I gave my Sol10 20GB.
[01:29]<sfcgsfnff>yea, and im on 128mb p3500mhz
[01:29]<sfcgsfnff>need mo ram
[01:29]<sfcgsfnff>had to steal some frmo my fbsd
[01:30]<rrmnsm>freeware companion disk installs to /opt/sfw by default
[01:30]<vycyrr666>I'm lucky in that regard, both my machines have decent memory (256Mb and 512MB(
[01:30]<sfcgsfnff>wha, jamesd?
[01:30]<ryrxvswyd>what installs to /usr/sfw then?
[01:30]<rrmnsm>spknspell, /opt/sfw
[01:30]<ryrxvswyd>oh, stuff from the install cd's indeed
[01:31]<lnnzan>all reet. just scored a x6601a kit from ebay for $140 :) thats a 8 drive scsi backplane + cables + x6540a dual channel ultra scsi card, for a E450...
[01:31]<sfcgsfnff>i should put allocate the whole 2nd disk to /opt/sfw then
[01:31]<sfcgsfnff>damn, nigguh
[01:31]<rrmnsm>spknspell, no.. give it to /opt
[01:31]<sfcgsfnff>oh sorry
[01:32]<rrmnsm>that is where blastwave and the freeware companion disk and sun studio 10/11 installs
[01:32]<sfcgsfnff>8 scsi backplane
[01:33]<rrmnsm>peerce, cool but seems a bit expensive. cant you find a e450 local on ebay that you can scavenge the parts out of... for a bit more but have lots of extras
[01:35]<lnnzan>jamesd; um, i've already got a spare e450 ... don't need more scrap metal
[01:35]<lnnzan>i'm scrounging the CPUs and ram out of the 'spare' so the 'first' will be 4x400Mhz and 4GB
[01:36]<lnnzan>neither has any drive expansion backplanes in it
[01:45]<-- sgvgzs xzs fuyv (>/dev/brain")
[01:45]<lnnzan>omg, I forgot, heh... I took pictures of the innards of one of these E450s when we first got them... back in january 2000. http://www.hogranch.com/CoolPix/24Jan00/
[01:58]<zxzzfyns>peerce: I expected some piles of dust or something...
[01:59]<lnnzan>in 2000, a e450 was still new
[01:59]<lnnzan>those were brand new
[01:59]<zxzzfyns>yea, that's when we got ours
[01:59]<zxzzfyns>slow web server :(
[01:59]<lnnzan>i took those pictures after uncrating it, before putting it in service.
[01:59]<zxzzfyns>hehe
[01:59]<lnnzan>we use them to run oracle database instances for test and development
[01:59]<arrrrfx>slow depends on how much visitors you have
[01:59]<zxzzfyns>jengelh: it shouldn't.
