Log from #solaris at freenode 2006-08-07
[00:00]<dzvzsvznzd>morteng: i have no idea about codeing
[00:01]<xrfy>hm, must say i'm quite tempted to get a few t1000 at work now when they are usable
[00:01]<djzvrrr>ok, I'd like to try performance analyzer as IDE with gcc under linux, where could I discuss that ?
[00:02]<dzvzsvznzd>you could try #opensolaris, there is a few sun experts in there, other then that not sure
[00:02]<djzvrrr>ok
[00:03]<dzvzsvznzd>morteng: doesnt seem to be many people about in their or here, mabey ask back later as well
[00:04]<djzvrrr>sure I'll stay tuned.
[00:17]<ygsjdgyr>same bat-time.
[00:17]<ygsjdgyr>same bat-channel
[00:17]<dzvzsvznzd>heh
[00:18]<ygsjdgyr>damn. I'm out of onions.
[00:21]<lysxsljrrn>DataStream: i think i have d0 as a mirror, and d100 and d101 as submirrors at the moment... but how can i confirm this?
[00:21]<dzvzsvznzd>Terrible, how could you let somsthing as serous as that happen insomnia
[00:21]<lysxsljrrn>and if this is the case, what should i call my mirror and submirrors of swap (my only other partition, other than the metadb partition)?
[00:22]<dzvzsvznzd>metastat
[00:22]<wrdvd>insomnia: your breath will smell better
[00:22]<lysxsljrrn>d0: Mirror
[00:22]<lysxsljrrn> Submirror 0: d100
[00:22]<lysxsljrrn> State: Okay
[00:22]<lysxsljrrn> Submirror 1: d101
[00:22]<lysxsljrrn> State: Okay
[00:23]<lysxsljrrn>so i guess i do have a mirror called "d0", and two submirrors called "d100" and "d101", right?
[00:23]<lysxsljrrn>for swap, should i therefore have d1 as the mirror, and d102 and d103 as the submirrors?
[00:23]<dzvzsvznzd>no, the d numbers have to be unique
[00:23]<dzvzsvznzd>and they can be anything you want
[00:23]<dzvzsvznzd>or as AJ_Z0 said ....
[00:23]<dzvzsvznzd>20:25 < AJ_Z0> If you have more than nine mirrors or submirrors per mirror,
[00:23]<dzvzsvznzd> then three digits make sense, or you could just come up with
[00:23]<dzvzsvznzd> your own half-baked scheme
[00:23]<lysxsljrrn>indeed
[00:23]<dzvzsvznzd>oops, wrong quote
[00:24]<dzvzsvznzd>20:24 < AJ_Z0> The convention is to have d10, d20, d30, etc. for the mirrir and
[00:24]<dzvzsvznzd> d11+d12+, d21+d22+... for the submirrors
[00:24]<wrdvd>insomnia: onions will make your breat smell :/
[00:25]<lysxsljrrn>indeed, but Meriwether obviously doesn' stick to this convention, so i now have d0, d100 and d101, lol
[00:25]<lysxsljrrn>so would it make sense to have d1 as the swap mirror, and d102 and d103 as the submirrors?
[00:26]<wrdvd>insomnia: cooking?
[00:26]<dzvzsvznzd>upto you, but when not use d20,d21,d22
[00:26]<dzvzsvznzd>s/when/why
[00:27]<ayda>Trying to add a network card.. from the docs, what is doing a "touch/reconfigure" ?
[00:27]<ygsjdgyr>meh
[00:27]<ygsjdgyr>klmc: when you reboot, it'll scan for new hardware
[00:27]<dzvzsvznzd>kimc: just type devfsadm
[00:27]<lysxsljrrn>i could use d20, d21 and d22, but given that i've got a weird setup on my machine already, wouldn't it make sense to stick to that?
[00:27]<dzvzsvznzd>it saves a reboot
[00:28]<ygsjdgyr>devfsadm -C
[00:28]<ayda>great thatnks
[00:28]<lysxsljrrn>other wise i'll have mirrors d20 and d0, and submirrors d100, d101, d21 and d22
[00:28]<dzvzsvznzd>fishsponge: entirely upto you
[00:28]<lysxsljrrn>DateStream: very true
[00:28]<lysxsljrrn>i think i'll go with d1, d102 and d103...
[00:30]<lysxsljrrn>for the root partition, i started by running "metainit -f d100 1 1 c0t0d0s0", so for swap, should it be "metainit -f d102 1 1 c0t0d0s1"?
[00:31]<wrdvd>anyone good with iptables here?
[00:34]<dzvzsvznzd>fishsponge: yes
[00:35]<rgmmlmw>hello, i'm new to opensolaris/ solaris 10, but know a lil about < Solaris 10. i have a question about hostname files
[00:35]<rgmmlmw>in pre-Solaris 10, there were 3 files to change when you wanted to change hostname: /etc/hosts, /etc/nodename, and /etc/hostname.interface
[00:35]<rgmmlmw>i'm not seeing /etc/hostname.internface in opensolaris, which is fine, but am i missing another important file?
[00:36]<dzvzsvznzd>if there is no hostname.XXX then the NIC is either not there, or hasnt been configured
[00:37]<rgmmlmw>hmm.. interesting (thanks for jumping in, BTW)
[00:38]<rgmmlmw>the nic is there, and working fine... this box was handed to me somewhat configured
[00:38]<zjmzyac2zjwg>maybe its on dhcp ?
[00:38]<rgmmlmw>you answered my question, that file *was* preserved in solaris 10, opensolaris
[00:39]<dzvzsvznzd>Hmm, in solaris thats what plumb's the NIC at boottime
[00:39]<lysxsljrrn>DataStream: now i've mirrored both swap and / successfully, is there anything else i need to duplicate?
[00:39]<rgmmlmw>well, i just created the file, and rebooted
[00:39]<lysxsljrrn>this web page someone directed me to says i need to run installboot
[00:39]<dzvzsvznzd>fishsponge: nope, you had just the 2 partitions, did you change vfstab for the mirror?
[00:40]<dzvzsvznzd>and did you check it was all running, with netastat
[00:40]<dzvzsvznzd>metastat even
[00:40]<dzvzsvznzd>andypdx: as rodrickbrown said, it might be DHCP, i dont use it, so i dont know
[00:41]<lysxsljrrn>DataStream: um... some command i ran before automatically updated /etc/vfstab for the root partition, but it hasn't happened for swap
[00:41]<rgmmlmw>it is not
[00:41]<rgmmlmw>dhcp
[00:41]<dzvzsvznzd>ok
[00:41]<dzvzsvznzd>fishsponge: yep
[00:41]<dzvzsvznzd>you have to do it yourself
[00:41]<rgmmlmw>this just in, that file just seems not necessarily, i guess
[00:41]<lysxsljrrn>DataStream: maybe it was the "metaroot" command last time... does that sound correct?
[00:41]<rgmmlmw>cruise-azy
[00:42]<rgmmlmw>but i *did* put it in, just to be safe
[00:42]<dzvzsvznzd>just stick a /md in vfstab after /dev
[00:42]<lysxsljrrn>and change c0t0d0s1 to d1, of course
[00:43]<lysxsljrrn>right?
[00:43]<dzvzsvznzd>yes
[00:43]<lysxsljrrn>and reboot?
[00:43]<lysxsljrrn>do i need to "lockfs -a" this time?
[00:43]<dzvzsvznzd>hold on
[00:43]<lysxsljrrn>k
[00:43]<dzvzsvznzd>you did metainit d1 -m 102
[00:43]<dzvzsvznzd>and you havent rebooted yet?
[00:44]<dzvzsvznzd>if so, good, reboot then run the metattach commend
[00:44]<lysxsljrrn>no, i did reboot already
[00:44]<lysxsljrrn>i'll tell ya what i ran
[00:44]<lysxsljrrn>for swap
[00:44]<dzvzsvznzd>well basiaclyy if its syning its good
[00:45]<lysxsljrrn>metainit -f d102 1 1 c0t0d0s1
[00:45]<lysxsljrrn>metainit d1 -m d102
[00:45]<lysxsljrrn>lockfs -a; reboot
