[00:05]<zzzznzzs>hi all.. Im trying to install osuse10.1 onto a new system with 3 drives as raid-5... On my first boot, Im getting a raid failure; it seems one of the drives is a "spare". how/can I fix that?
[00:06]<wzznt>RangerNS: you cannot boot off a raid5
[00:06]<wzznt>RangerNS: lilo doesnt support it
[00:06]<wzznt>RangerNS: only raid5
[00:06]<wzznt>RangerNS: only raid1 you can boot from
[00:06]<erde>RangerNS: make sure you set up a small /boot partition with raid-1 and you can have as much raid-5 on everything else as you want...
[00:06]<wzznt>yup
[00:06]<zcz_mzuym>and set the other drives as spare for that raid1
[00:07]<erde>yes
[00:07]<zzzznzzs>I have a /boot partition on its own, but not a /[root] ... in any event, none of the partitions should be "spare"
[00:09]<erde>RangerNS: you don't need root by itself... just /boot and it MUST BE RAID-1
[00:09]<pz2-wjzc>or raid0 :)
[00:10]<erde>frb-work: if you're feeling incredibly dumb... ;o)
[00:10]<2yff-2zzzynzn>the guy who run the only host in this town got it all on raid0 told him he was dumb and he didnt understood why ...
[00:11]<spyn>bill-barriere: he will when he has a drive failure :P
[00:11]<2yff-2zzzynzn>Raid-0
[00:11]<2yff-2zzzynzn>Yes, permanent protection of the data.
[00:11]<spyn>some ppl like to learn things the hard way
[00:11]<pz2-wjzc>I only used raid0 once
[00:12]<2yff-2zzzynzn>he got that on his website ... laughed my ass off
[00:12]<pz2-wjzc>but that was because I had 4 100M hard drives or something
[00:12]<spyn>wow, sounds like that guys is severely misinformed...
[00:12]<erde>I still use raid0 for some things...
[00:12]<erde>/usr/src is one of my favorites...
[00:12]<erde>but even that is falling into disuse for me since I do so little kernel compilation...
[00:12]<2yff-2zzzynzn>i told him but apparently i dunno wtf am talking about
[00:13]<erde>bill-barriere: just tell him to set up a bunch of spares for the arrays... ;o)
[00:13]<2yff-2zzzynzn>http://www.neptunerevolution.com/en/internet/hebergement.htm
[00:14]<lypvnz>what would be the best way to non-destructivly resize my partitions?
[00:14]<erde>Lifter: backup, resize, restore
[00:14]<erde>Lifter: or use LVM from the get-go
[00:15]<dzsvgzvsugzdy>hi.
[00:15]<lypvnz>thanks
[00:16]<dzsvgzvsugzdy>I was wondering if there was a way to get that cool menu from SLED onto the free version? :O
[00:16]<2yff-2zzzynzn>speaking of witch he use suse on those host ... you see someone else from same isp as me same town comming in here point at him and laugh a bit ...
[00:16]<2yff-2zzzynzn>same isp as me *
[00:21]<lugaauv>nXOR : ping?
[00:23]<fzzzudzffzdzz>hey guys, i setup my samba server as the primary domain controller... well im not sure how to get windows to join the domain. it asks for the user name and password and im not sure what username or password to fill in. any idea?
[00:24]<grsmgygvggmj>!smart
[00:24]<susnxnfl>smart is a great package management frontend that supports many repository formats - more info on http://smartpm.org - The Guru build comes preloaded with Inst-Source, Non-OSS, Packman, Guru, and KDE supp repositories. Here is a spoon-fed howto: http://spinink.net/2006/05/20/installing-smart-package-manager/
[00:24]<erde>penguinplayer: generally, windows wants your domain administrator
[00:25]<fzzzudzffzdzz>so what... root?
[00:25]<fzzzudzffzdzz>and the password
[00:25]<erde>penguinplayer: if root is the domain administrator, sure...
[00:25]<rvuvjg>Does anyone know a good program for printing code? I've seen windows users use a program that prints in portrait and has a left and right column, wondering if there's something similar for linux?
[00:25]<sajgns>penguinplayer, take look at smbpasswd. you need to create the users on the Linux side.
[00:26]<spyn>i use quanta to print my code...
[00:26]<2rdndjzr>hi - I don't get what's going on here. I've just installed Suse 10.1, and I'm trying to do an update - and I'm getting an error about libzypp-patch-zmdrestart.sh
[00:26]<rvuvjg>sPiN: thanks, will give that a shot
[00:26]<2rdndjzr>can anyone help me out please?
[00:26]<spyn>dont know about a feature like that, but i never looked, i use legal paper..
[00:26]<erde>sjones: not necessarily... from his description, it looked as though he is using samba as the dc...
[00:26]<cxzogx>i need some help compiling my SDL app on Suse... i pasted my make file and output can anyone help ? http://cpp.sourceforge.net/?show=17462
[00:26]<fzzzudzffzdzz>ohhhh
[00:26]<fzzzudzffzdzz>yeah, i have samba setup as PDC
[00:27]<cxzogx>anyone ? :|
[00:27]<lugaauv>penguinplayer : your using xp pro correct?
[00:27]<erde>an smbusermap MIGHT be necessary, but not necessarily...
[00:27]<2rdndjzr>anyone else got a problem with updating suse??????
[00:27]<czznz>SUSEhelp, mirrors
[00:27]<susnxnfl> For inst-sources: < http://www.opensuse.org/Mirrors_Released_Version >. For ISOs: http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux/downloads/ftp/mirrors_isos.html
[00:27]<2rdndjzr>or is it just me
[00:27]<fzzzudzffzdzz>well, actually the system im using is windows server 2003
[00:27]<erde>penguinplayer: ah, well then you're fscked
[00:27]<2rdndjzr>kjaer: was that meant for me?
[00:27]<mrpwjggyw>bjdemora: Well, first of all - YAST Online Update sucks ass.
[00:27]<fzzzudzffzdzz>and my desktop system is win xp home edition. but im pretty sure it cant join a domain
[00:27]<gxor>ChrOnX: why dont u instlal SDL from RPM ?
[00:27]<erde>windows server 2003 AD doesn't play with Samba 3.x AD
[00:27]<2rdndjzr>daPhoenix: OK, so what do I use instead
[00:27]<czznz>bjdemora: No
[00:28]<mrpwjggyw>bjdemora: The YOU in the "shipping version" was a bit broken.
[00:28]<cxzogx>nXOR i did.
[00:28]<2rdndjzr>right. so how do I fix YOU
[00:28]<fzzzudzffzdzz>ramz.: its saying i can join a domain. i just need domain admin user name and password or some crap
[00:28]<mrpwjggyw>bjdemora: They released patches that (apparently?) fixes the updating issue.
[00:28]<cxzogx>well... i installed with yast after rpm failed from dependency conflicts :|
[00:28]<lugaauv>wow i cant believe the OSS community is just leaving the package management system at "it sucks dont use it"
[00:28]<2rdndjzr>where do I get these patches?
[00:28]<cxzogx>yast -i SDL_image-devel and whatnot
[00:28]<mrpwjggyw>bjdemora: Now, you should when you're young and fresh ( :D ) learn how to use SMART :)
[00:28]<mrpwjggyw>!smart @ bjdemora
[00:29]<gxor>ChrOnX: so whats the problem
